Travellers choosing when to visit Madeira often find a festival in almost every month and wonder which is worth planning around. Each has its own season and its own crowd, and the calendar is the key to choosing.
The year runs like this. Carnival fills February with night parades through Funchal. The Flower Festival covers the city in flowers from late April through May. The Atlantic Festival brings a fireworks contest over the bay on the Saturdays of June. The Funchal Jazz Festival fills two parks in early July. The Wine Festival spans late August and early September, with the harvest in the vineyards. The Nature Festival takes the island outdoors in early October. And the Christmas and New Year season ends the year with the fireworks over Funchal Bay, once recognised as the largest display in the world. Most of the programme is free in the streets; the jazz festival's main nights are the exception, at €15 a night in 2026.

In the cityWinter: Carnival and the end of the year
The common mistake is to think winter is Madeira's quiet season. It has two of its best-known celebrations, one at each end of it.
Carnival runs from 3 to 14 February in 2027. Its Allegoric Parade, floats and troupes in sequins and feathers, crosses Funchal city centre at night, on two nights, 5 and 6 February, for the first time; in 2026 about 1,500 revellers paraded. On Carnival Tuesday, the satirical Cortejo Trapalhão follows in the afternoon, and in Santana the Festa dos Compadres opens the season. The Carnival guide has the routes and times.
The Christmas and New Year season runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027: the dawn masses before Christmas, the market night at the Mercado dos Lavradores on 23 December, and, at midnight on New Year's Eve, eight minutes of fireworks from nearly 60 launch points around the bay. The Christmas and New Year guide covers where to watch.

Spring: the Flower Festival
Visitors in May often find the city full of flowers without knowing why. It is the Flower Festival, and it has fixed days worth catching.
In 2027 it runs from 29 April to 30 May. It opens with a flower exhibition; in 2026 the 71st opened the festival on 30 April at Largo da Restauração. On a Saturday morning, children place a flower on the Wall of Hope, an appeal for peace. Through the festival, flower carpets line Avenida Arriaga, where a wall of flowers is built in the central walkways, and a market sells flowers and regional food.
The highlight is the Allegoric Parade on two Sundays in May, floats covered in flowers along the seafront; the 2027 programme gives 2 and 16 May. In 2026 each parade had about a thousand participants, from 16:30 on Avenida do Mar.
May is one of the best months to visit anyway: 22.0 °C by day in Funchal and only 27.2 mm of rain. The Flower Festival guide has the details.

Summer: fireworks and jazz
People often plan summer as a beach season and miss that it is also full of events, from the June fireworks to the July jazz.
The Atlantic Festival fills June, from 4 to 27 June in 2027. On the first three Saturdays, the Madeira International Fireworks Contest puts on a 20-minute pyromusical show over the bay of Funchal, one country a night, for a jury trophy and a public one. In 2026 the countries were Canada, China and Ukraine, each at 22:30. Around them come the Summer Sunsets market by Praça do Povo, the Regional Arts Week and opera at the Fortaleza do Pico. The Atlantic Festival guide covers where to watch.
In early July the Funchal Jazz Festival follows: free concerts in the Municipal Garden, then ticketed nights in the Santa Catarina Park, €15 a night or €40 for three in 2026, when it ran from 6 to 11 July. The jazz guide has the line-up and tickets.

Late summer and autumn: wine and nature
The mistake is to think the season ends in August. Two festivals run into the autumn.
The Madeira Wine Festival runs from 22 August to 12 September in 2027. Its centre in Funchal is the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo, with producers pouring and regional bands playing; its high point in the country is the harvest festival at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, with grape picking, a procession and grape treading, in the first half of September. In 2026 the programme had 38 performances, 10 commented tastings and 10 dinners paired with Madeira wine. The Wine Festival guide has the programme.
The Nature Festival follows in early October, from 6 to 11 October in 2026, with activities across the archipelago: levada walks, waterfall descents in the north-coast mountains and bike rides on forest trails, booked at the organisers' stand at Largo da Restauração. The Nature Festival guide covers it.
Organisers for the Nature Festival hold their booking stand at Largo da Restauração in early October.Choosing a festival
People often pick a festival by its photograph and then find the week does not suit them. Match it to the trip.
For families, the Flower Festival is the gentlest: daytime parades, the Wall of Hope for children and the carpets on Avenida Arriaga. For the evenings, Carnival and New Year's Eve are the ones, with their night-time parades and fireworks. For music, the Jazz Festival and the Atlantic Festival's opera nights. For food and wine, the Wine Festival. For an active trip, the Nature Festival.
The weather follows the calendar. February's nights are the coolest of the year, about 13.9 °C, so bring a jacket for Carnival. May, June and July are dry, and the sea passes 20 °C from June. December is the wettest month, 94.8 mm, so pack a waterproof for New Year.
Every festival is centred on Funchal, so the city is the natural base.
Daytime parades feature carpets on Avenida Arriaga as part of the gentlest festival events.Planning around a festival
The mistake is to book the festival weekend last. The busiest weeks fill early.
Hotel occupancy in the region follows the calendar. In 2025 it was lowest in December, 52.8%, and January, 54.1%, and highest in August, 76.7%, with July at 75.6% and June at 74.3%. For the Wine Festival, the organisers projected about 90% in 2026. Book early for the festival weekends, the June Saturdays, August and the last week of December.
A room in the centre of Funchal puts every festival within walking distance: the seafront avenues for the parades and fireworks, Avenida Arriaga for the flowers and the Municipal Garden, Praça do Povo for the Wine Lounge and the Summer Sunsets, and Santa Catarina Park for the jazz. Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Before you go
People often find last year's dates online. Every festival moves a little each year.
The tourism board publishes the dates of each festival on its own pages, and the Madeira events calendar lists the day-by-day programme. Check both before booking flights around a single event. The Visit Madeira site gathers them in one place.
