Seven questions, one Funchal neighbourhood
Answer the seven questions and one area comes back first, with what the catalogue holds there and the fares your choice moves.
Nothing is priced by the night: rates change by the date, and one sample weekend is not a price. Each card counts the Booking listings whose postcode falls in the area, with their median guest rating out of 10 and the straight-line distance from the Sé. The Aerobus fare, €6.70 each way on board, is added for anyone without a car, and two city bus trips a day at €2.05 for the areas up the hill or along the Lido. A postcode can straddle two areas, and each is counted where most of its listings sit.
Most visitors choose a hotel in Funchal before they choose the area, and the area decides more of the trip: how far the walk to dinner is, how steep the walk home, whether the pool or the old town is at the door. The answer turns on five things about you: whether you go out in the evening, your budget, whether you rent a car, whether small children are coming, and how early your days start.
Funchal's places to stay fall into six areas. The Lido, in São Martinho, is the resort strip; the Sé is the centre around the cathedral; the Zona Velha is the old town; São Pedro and Santa Luzia climb the hill behind them; and Monte sits far above. Of the 240 places to stay in the city with a guest score of 7.0 or more, the old town has the highest median score, 9.0, and São Pedro the lowest median price.
One well-rated stay in each of the three most chosen areas.

The old townEvenings out, or quiet nights
The common mistake is to book the old town for its charm and then want an early night. Choose by your evenings.
If you go out most evenings, the old town and the centre put dinner on foot. Within 450 m of Rua de Santa Maria, the old town's main street, are 96 restaurants, and they fill in the evening; within 500 m of the cathedral, 149. The walk home is short and mostly flat along the seafront.
If you want quiet nights, look up the hill or west along the coast. São Pedro, west of the centre and uphill, has 73 restaurants within 500 m and eight museums, but calmer streets; Santa Luzia, above the old town, is quieter still, with four viewpoints and only a few places to eat nearby. The Lido has 135 restaurants within 1 km, spread along the resort strip, and its evenings are the hotels' own.
Monte is the quietest of all, a village far above the city: the cable car's last boarding is at 17:45, so the evenings there are spent in Monte, or a taxi or bus ride away.
The old town suits couples and anyone who dines out; the Lido and the hills suit families and light sleepers.

Budget
Visitors often assume the cheapest room is far from everything. In Funchal, the savings are uphill, not far away.
On a sample search, two adults for two nights from 10 to 12 October 2026, the median place above the floor cost about €300 in São Pedro and about €314 in Santa Luzia, against about €404 in the Sé and €432 on the Lido. The old town, mostly flats and guest houses, came in at about €353. Prices move with the dates, and they climb for the busy months.
The saving comes with the climb: São Pedro and Santa Luzia are close to the centre in a straight line, but up steep streets. Santa Luzia has two city bus routes, 026 and 070, down to the seafront, and a trip costs €2.05 on board or €1.45 on a GIRO card on the 2026 tariff.
At the top end, the Lido holds 24 of the city's 47 hotels and half of its five-stars, with the resort pools and the sea. Every area adds the tourist tax: €2 per guest per night, for at most 7 nights.
For a tight budget with evenings out, the old town's guest houses and the hostel on Rua de Santa Maria give the best of both.

A car, or none
People often rent a car for the whole stay and then fight for a parking space in the old town. Match the area to the car.
Without a car, stay on the flat strip by the sea: the Sé, the old town or the Lido. The Aerobus from the airport stops on the Avenida do Mar in the centre and runs through the Lido to Praia Formosa, and the tours and island trips collect from hotels in the city. The cable car to Monte leaves from the old town, €16 one way and €22 return.
With a car, the Lido and the hills are easier than the centre. The old town's lanes are narrow, so check parking before you book a flat there; several hotels on the Lido and in the hills list free parking, among them Casa Velha do Palheiro.
For a stay with a car for only part of it, stay central and hire one for the days to the west and north: the tours cover the rest.
Monte suits a car best of all: the buses and the cable car reach it, but the evenings in the city need a taxi or a drive.

Children and early starts
The mistake is to book the steep hill with a pushchair. Children change the answer more than anything else.
With small children, the Lido is the usual answer: the seafront promenade is flat, the Lido bathing complex has a Blue Flag in 2026 and costs €6 a visit on the Frente MarFunchal tariff from June to September, and the resort hotels have the children's pools and the kids' clubs. The old town is flat by the sea, but its evenings are loud; the hills are steep for small legs.
For early starts, such as a sunrise on Pico do Areeiro, a whale trip or an island tour, stay where the pickups begin. The tours collect from hotels in Funchal, and the whale and boat trips leave from the marina by the centre, so the centre and the Lido save the most time.
For a late flight home or an early one, the Aerobus route, through the centre and the Lido, is the one to be near: the first bus from the airport leaves at 08:30 and the last at 22:00, and outside those hours a taxi is the way.
Hikers who start before dawn do best near a tour pickup in the centre or on the Lido.
Staying near the centre or the Lido minimises travel time for early morning tours and airport transfers.Choosing between two
Visitors often narrow the choice to two areas and then pick on price. Pick on the one thing that matters most.
Between the Lido and the centre: choose the Lido for the pools and the sea, the centre for walking to everything. The promenade links them, so from either, the other is a walk away.
Between the centre and the old town: choose the old town for the evenings and the highest scores, the centre for more hotels and quieter nights. They are side by side.
Between the old town and São Pedro or Santa Luzia: choose the hills for a lower price and quiet, the old town for the flat walk home.
And between Funchal and the rest of the island: stay in Funchal for a first trip, since the buses and nearly all the tours start there, and add a few nights in Calheta or Machico with a car.
The where-to-stay guide compares the areas in full, and the hotel ranking lists the best places in each.
