Visitors who want to surf in Madeira soon find that Funchal has no surf beach: the waves break on the north and east coasts, and the lessons start there. For Madeira surf school private lessons, the prices run from €100 to €150 a person, and group lessons from €50 to €65, at a handful of schools around the beaches of Porto da Cruz, 33 minutes from Funchal by road, and at São Vicente on the north coast.

Most schools include the board, the wetsuit and insurance, and several collect from Funchal for a fee. Two group lessons from Funchal are also sold with transport to the beach: a 4-hour lesson rated 4.70 from 311 reviews, and another of 4 hours, 4.74 from 77.

The waves decide the beach on the day, so the school chooses where you surf.

Porto da Cruz, the surf village

The common mistake is to book a lesson at the nearest beach to your hotel. The schools are on the other side of the island.

Porto da Cruz, on the north-east coast, is where most schools are based, around the beach of Praia da Alagoa and the seafront of Rua da Praia. It is 33 minutes from Funchal, 32 km by road, and the beach breaks there suit beginners and intermediate surfers.

Madeira New Wave, in the village, teaches surf and bodyboard in lessons of 2 hours: €55 for one, €160 for three and €250 for five, with gear and insurance included and a transfer at €20 a person. It moves the lesson between Porto da Cruz, Machico and Seixal by the forecast. A Madeira New Wave surf school private lesson is also offered, for one-to-one coaching at any level; its head coach has been certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation since 2010.

For a first lesson, a group suits most people: the price is lower, and at Surf Clube da Madeira a group has at most 8. Book a private lesson if you want faster progress, or if you are already standing up.

Private lessons compared

Visitors often compare the price per lesson and miss the time in the water. The lessons differ in length as much as in price.

Calhau Surf School private lessons Madeira visitors book last at least 3 hours, with a dedicated instructor, for €150 a person; the school, running since 2009, is at the Hotel Vila Bela on the beach at Porto da Cruz, with changing rooms and fresh-water showers, and a transfer from Funchal adds €10.

Salty Madeira Surf School private lessons are part of a price range of €55 to €200, group or private, at Rua da Praia in Porto da Cruz, with an instructor certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation, all the gear and insurance; the transfer is not included, and the school chooses the beach by your level.

At the lower end, a private lesson at the school named Madeira Surf Camp costs €100 a person for 2 hours in the water, with the gear and a certified instructor.

Call a day ahead to agree the time with the forecast: the schools set the lesson by the waves.

São Vicente and the north coast

People often assume the north coast is only for experts. São Vicente has a school for every level.

A Madeira Surf Center private lesson lasts one hour in the water with an instructor, and the school in São Vicente, 36 minutes from Funchal, also teaches couples, children under 12, semi-private groups, groups and families. The lesson includes the wetsuit, board, leash, wax, fins and insurance, and a talk on the area, the swell and the conditions. You meet at the Cais do Seixal or at the Baía dos Juncos.

The school sells packs of 3, 5, 7 and 10 lessons, and advises at least 5 consecutive lessons for real progress.

Seixal, 47 minutes from Funchal, is also one of the beaches Madeira New Wave uses when the forecast favours the north-west.

Further west, on the south-west coast, Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, 40 and 42 minutes from Funchal, are the island's famous breaks. Jardim do Mar is a right-hand point break that works on a north-west swell from October to March, best in December and January, and it is for experts only: a seawall built in the 2000s makes the exit dangerous.

The mistake is to forget the ride. From Funchal, the transfer is part of the day.

A Surf Clube da Madeira private surf lesson costs €150 with transport, about 4 hours in all, and the club, on the beach at Praia da Alagoa in Porto da Cruz, runs group lessons of up to 8: €55 without transport, about 2 hours 30 minutes, and €65 with it, about 4 hours with 1 hour 30 minutes in the water. Five lessons cost €245, and boards rent from €30 a day.

Machico, 23 minutes from Funchal and one of New Wave's beaches, has three beaches with a Blue Flag on the 2026 list.

Camps, the sea and what to bring

Visitors often think a surf camp means moving out of Funchal for a week. Some do, and the lessons alone are enough for most.

Madeira Surf Camp private lessons, at €100 a person, sit beside group lessons at €50, board rental at €25 for a half day and €35 for a full day, and guided surf trips of 3 hours for €150 or 6 hours for €250, with transport, gear and photos or video. The school is certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation, the tourism bureau and the port authority.

For a week, Surf Clube da Madeira runs a 7-day surf and yoga camp for €800, with accommodation, meals and trips around the island.

The sea off Funchal is at its coolest in March, at about 17.6 °C, and peaks at about 22.9 °C in September; the schools supply the wetsuit. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, sun cream, water and a light snack.
