Visitors who want to see Funchal at their own pace, rather than from a coach window, have two good options: a guided walk through the old centre, or an e-bike along the coast. Anyone hoping for running tours Madeira style, a guided jog through the city, will find none sold from Funchal; the walks and the self-guided e-bike routes are the nearest thing.
Sixteen walking, bike and tuk-tuk tours run from Funchal, from 11 operators, and every one can be cancelled free of charge within its window. The most reviewed by far is a 2-hour old town walk, rated 4.72 from 3,853 reviews, which takes in the farmers' market, the cathedral and a wine lodge.
Five of the tours are walks, five are e-bike rides and six go by tuk-tuk.

The old town walk
The common mistake is to walk the old town alone and miss what is behind the doors. The guided walk goes inside.
The most-reviewed walk starts at the Jesuits' College, at the University of Madeira entrance on Rua dos Ferreiros, next to a wine shop, and lasts 2 hours. Entry to the Jesuits' College is included, and the route goes through the Farmers' Market, a 19th-century sweet factory and a traditional wine lodge, with the City Hall, the Legislative Assembly and the cathedral on the way.
The cathedral, the Sé, was inaugurated in 1514 and has one of the finest cedar ceilings in Portugal. The Igreja do Colégio faces the town hall across the square.
Guides lead in English, German and French. Food and drinks are not included, and there is no hotel pickup, so walk to the meeting point.
Wear comfortable shoes: the streets are cobbled and some climb steeply from the sea. The market's hours are on the municipality's market page.

Visitors often assume every walk is the same route. The smaller walks go elsewhere.
A private walk with a local, of up to 6 hours, lets you choose the meeting point, the start time and the interests; entry fees and meals are extra. It is rated 3.98 from 19 reviews, lower than the rest, so read the reviews before booking.
A private guided walk of 5 hours adds pickup from a hotel, the port or an apartment and transport by private vehicle, and covers the market, the Campo Almirante Reis, the São Tiago fort and the cathedral.
Two newer walks are narrower. A historian leads a 2-hour walk through bookshops and old sugar mills, starting at a square with a fountain. Two botanists lead a walk of 2 hours 30 minutes in French through a private tropical garden, in a small group, with the meeting point sent the day before and a homemade drink at the end.
For the public gardens, the Botanical Garden costs €10 over 12 and Monte Palace €18 an adult.

E-bike rides
People often imagine cycling in Madeira as a climb. On the e-bike routes, a transfer or the motor takes care of the hills.
Four of the five e-bike rides are run by one operator, MADCycle, from the cable car station on the seafront. A guided ride of 4 hours, rated 5.0 from 11 reviews, takes a transfer up to Cabo Girão, where the cliff rises 580 m above the sea, stops for coffee and cake at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, and rides down to Funchal.
Two self-guided rides of 3 hours follow a GPS route along the coast: east to the Cristo Rei at Garajau, with a swim at the beach in the marine reserve, or west to the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. A longer self-guided ride of 5 hours starts at 07:00 at the Ponta de São Lourenço and rides back to Funchal, with hotel pickup.
The fifth ride, guided, climbs by shuttle to the mountains and descends from Pico do Areeiro to Caniço de Baixo on a full-suspension e-bike, over roads and forest trails.

Who can ride, and what is included
The mistake is to book an e-bike ride for the whole family. The limits are strict.
The MADCycle rides are not suitable for children under 13, for anyone who cannot ride a bike, or for people with recent surgery; most also exclude people over 120 kg, and the Garajau ride those under 140 cm. The guided ride to Cabo Girão excludes people without experience and people with heart problems.
Each ride includes the helmet, a saddlebag, a lock, a visibility vest and insurance, and the self-guided ones a GPS with the route, a repair kit and a first-aid kit. Gloves, cycling clothes, water and clip-on pedals are not included, so bring water and sports shoes.
The guided ride includes coffee and cake but not lunch, and the rides meet at the cable car station: only the sunrise ride from the east lists hotel pickup.
On the Cabo Girão ride, the skywalk over the cliff costs €5 for visitors over 12, paid through SIMplifica.

A day on foot in Funchal
Visitors often book a walk, then take a taxi everywhere else. Funchal's centre is small enough to link it all on foot.
Start with the old town walk in the morning, then walk east along Rua de Santa Maria, where about 200 doors have been painted by artists, to the São Tiago fort, built from 1614 against pirate attacks and listed as temporarily closed.
From the seafront, the cable car climbs to Monte, €16 one way and €22 return, daily from 09:00. At the top, the toboggans run about 2 km down to Livramento in about 10 minutes, €30 for one and €40 for two.
A tuk-tuk tour can do the same climb: one takes a tuk-tuk to Monte for the toboggan and back to the old town in 2 hours, with the toboggan tickets extra. The tuk-tuk guide compares them.
For the city buses, a trip costs €2.05 on board and €1.45 on a GIRO card, on the 2026 tariff.
