Parents planning Madeira often ask where the children can play on sand, since most of the island's beaches are pebble or rock. The Calheta beach Madeira families head for is one of the few described as a sand beach: sheltered, beside a marina, and awarded a Blue Flag in 2026.
Calheta is a municipality of about 11,300 people on the south-west coast, 34.6 km from Funchal, about 39 minutes by road. Around the beach are a contemporary art museum in an old manor and one of the island's oldest sugar-cane mills, and above it, in the hills of the same municipality, the Rabaçal walks to the Risco waterfall and the 25 Fontes.

The beach
The common mistake is to expect every Madeira beach to be like Calheta. It is the exception.
Madeira has 17 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, but most of its beaches are pebble or rock, with lidos and ladders into the sea; the sand beaches are few. The Calheta sandy beach Madeira visitors look for is one of them, about 100 m of imported yellow sand, and it holds a Blue Flag in 2026. A marina lies beside the beach.
For a first look, the Calheta Madeira beach is a place to spend the middle of the day: swim, eat in town, and move on to the museum or the mill in the afternoon.
The sea along the south coast is warmest from June to October, above 20 °C at Funchal, and at its peak, about 22.9 °C, in September.

A day in Calheta
People often drive to the beach and back without seeing the rest. Calheta has more.
A Calheta beach Madeira family day works well in three parts. The morning on the sand. Lunch in town. And in the afternoon, one of the two sights: MUDAS, the Contemporary Art Museum of Madeira, in a 16th-century manor house enlarged in the 18th century, or the Engenho da Calheta, one of the oldest sugar-cane mills in Madeira, which still makes rum and cane honey.
For older children who walk, the hills above offer more. PR6.1, the Levada do Risco at Rabaçal, is 1.5 km each way, rated easy, to a waterfall of about 100 m; PR6 continues 4.3 km each way to the 25 Fontes. The Calheta municipality runs a shuttle down to the Rabaçal trailhead.
The Calheta Madeira sandy beach family plan needs a car or a tour: the drive from Funchal is about 39 minutes, and Rabaçal has no regular bus. The Rabaçal walks guide covers the trails, and the 2026 Blue Flag list the beaches.
The PR6 trail continues from Rabaçal for 4.3 km each way to the 25 Fontes waterfall.Common questions
