Visitors who arrive in Madeira in early October often find the island busier with walkers and riders than they expected. That week is the Nature Festival, a programme of outdoor activities across the archipelago, built around the idea that the island's mountains, valleys and seas are its best attraction.

In 2026 the festival runs from 6 to 11 October, with events from 09:00 on the first day to 18:00 on the last. It takes place across the archipelago, with activities in places including Câmara de Lobos, Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz and Santana: walks along the levadas, descents of waterfalls in the mountains of the north coast, bike rides on forest trails, and, in recent editions, wellness too. The activities run in the daytime, so the evenings stay free for Funchal, and many of them need booking in advance, so check each one before the week starts.

Dates and hours

The common mistake is to book a week in late October for a festival that ends early in the month.

The 2026 Nature Festival runs from 6 to 11 October, from 09:00 on Tuesday 6 October to 18:00 on Sunday 11 October, by the official events calendar. In 2025 it ran from 7 to 12 October, so the festival keeps to the first half of October; the 2027 dates had not been published by September 2026.

It is organised by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism, Environment and Culture. It is one of the newest events in Madeira's calendar, and it has already established itself as one of the liveliest dates for anyone who combines adventure and the island's nature.

The activities run in the daytime, so the evenings stay free for Funchal. Plan the days around the activity you want most, and keep a spare day in case the weather closes a trail.

What happens

People often expect a single race or a show. The festival is a programme of many activities, most of them for ordinary visitors.

The activities fall into a few families. Walks along the levadas, the water channels that run along the island's hillsides, lead through the forest to viewpoints and waterfalls. Descents of the waterfalls in the mountains of the north coast, canyoning, are the adrenaline end. Bike rides follow the forest trails. And the most recent editions have added wellness and well-being to the adventure.

The festival also ties nature to culture: heritage, history and the island's food and wine sit alongside the sport.

For most visitors, one guided levada walk and one more adventurous activity make a good pair for the week. The hiking hub and the levada walks guide cover the trails the walks use.

How to book

The mistake is to turn up at a trailhead expecting to join. Activities are booked in advance.

Visitors book their nature activity at the organisers' stand at Largo da Restauração in Funchal, in the city centre. The official site, festivaldanatureza.pt, publishes the programme, and the Madeira events calendar lists the festival with its dates.

Book as early as you can after the programme is published, and carry the booking details on the day. For activities on classified walking trails, the trails' own rules still apply: each classified trail is booked on the SIMplifica portal for a date and a time slot, €4.50 for visitors over 12. Ask the organiser whether a festival walk includes that booking.

Outside the festival, local operators sell the same kinds of activity, so a stay that misses the festival week can still include them.

October weather

People often plan the mountains by the sunshine in Funchal. In October the two part ways.

On the coast, October is still warm: Funchal averages a high of 25.2 °C and a low of 19.2 °C, with about 194 hours of sun, and the sea is about 22.3 °C, warmer than in July. It is a good month for swimming and for water sports.

In the mountains and on the north side, the rain returns. At Queimadas, the start of PR9 above Santana, the station's normals give 284.8 mm of rain in October, more than double September's 132.4 mm, and at Fanal fog is frequent because of the altitude. Funchal itself averages 91.2 mm in October, up from 23.1 mm in September.

That is why a flexible week matters. Classified trails are closed or restricted by the authorities for safety, weather or risk on the ground, and a closure is the only case in which the trail fee is refunded.

A winding path through dense fog and ancient trees in the Fanal forest area of Madeira. At Fanal fog is frequent due to the altitude, making flexible planning important for hikers.

Levadas, canyoning and the rest of the year

Visitors often think the festival is the only chance to try these activities. It is the busiest week for them, not the only one.

The levadas are walkable all year. The classic walks include the Levada dos Tornos above Funchal, free and unclassified, PR11 to the Balcões viewpoint at Ribeiro Frio, 1.5 km each way, and PR6 to the 25 Fontes at Rabaçal, 4.3 km each way.

Local operators also run canyoning descents from Funchal outside the festival, at beginner and intermediate levels, as well as kayaking and coasteering on the coast. The festival week brings them together in one programme, with extra events and places.

The festival's places spread the activities across the island, from the south coast at Câmara de Lobos and Ponta do Sol to Calheta in the west and Santana and Porto Moniz in the north, so each day out is also a chance to see a different part of Madeira. For a week that mixes the festival with other plans, keep one day for the city and one spare for the weather, and use the rest for the activities that need a dry day in the mountains.

Planning a stay

The mistake is to base yourself in one corner of the island. The festival moves around it, and Funchal is the centre.

Funchal is the easiest base: the booking stand is in the centre, and the festival's places are within an hour by road, from Câmara de Lobos at about 14 minutes to Porto Moniz at about 56. A car or the tours' transfers cover the distances; some starts, such as Rabaçal and Fanal, have no regular bus.

October is a busy month. Hotel occupancy in the region was 71.4% in October 2025, so book a room early for the festival week. Accommodation in Funchal adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Pack for two climates: summer clothes and a swimsuit for the coast, and shoes with grip, a waterproof and a warm layer for the mountains.

Before you go

People often find the programme only once they arrive. Look for it before booking flights.

The dates for each year are published by the tourism board on the Visit Madeira Nature Festival page, and the programme on the festival's own site. Check both before planning the week around a specific activity.

For the trails the festival uses, the SIMplifica booking guide covers the fees, time slots and refund rules, and the canyoning guide the waterfall descents. For October's weather, see October in Funchal, and for the other festivals of the year, the festivals calendar.
