Visitors in Funchal in June often wonder why the waterfront fills up on a Saturday night. The answer is the Atlantic Festival, a month of events that opens the summer, with a fireworks contest over the bay at its heart.
In 2027 the festival runs from 4 to 27 June. On the first three Saturdays, the Madeira International Fireworks Contest puts on a pyromusical show of about 20 minutes over the bay of Funchal, one country each night, competing for two trophies. Around the fireworks come a sunset market by Praça do Povo from Thursday to Sunday, a week of regional arts in the city centre, opera nights at the Fortaleza do Pico, and closing shows in Porto Santo and Funchal. In 2026 the contest nights started at 22:30 at the Funchal pier, with Canada, China and Ukraine competing on the three Saturdays, one country a night, each show about 20 minutes long.

The dates
The common mistake is to arrive for the last weekend of June expecting the contest. It happens on the first three Saturdays.
For 2027, the Atlantic Festival runs from 4 to 27 June, with the fireworks contest on the first three Saturdays of the month. The closing pyromusical shows follow: in Porto Santo on 23 June, next to the pier in Vila Baleira, and in Funchal on 26 June.
The 2026 festival ran from 5 to 28 June. Its contest nights were 6, 13 and 20 June, each at 22:30 at the Funchal pier, and the closing show was on 27 June, also at the pier. A show in Machico Bay on 5 June opened the month, with Machico's historic market, and Porto Santo had its show on São João night, 23 to 24 June.
June is the start of summer in Funchal: average highs of 23.7 °C, lows of 18.2 °C and only 7.8 mm of rain, which makes the late-night shows comfortable outdoors.

The fireworks contest
People often think of it as one fireworks night. It is a competition, with a jury, a public vote and a different country each week.
The Madeira International Fireworks Contest brings three countries to Funchal, one on each of the first three Saturdays of June. Each puts on a pyromusical show of about 20 minutes over the bay, fireworks timed to music. In 2026 the countries were Canada on 6 June, China on 13 June and Ukraine on 20 June, each from 22:30 at the Funchal pier.
There are two trophies. The Atlantic Trophy is awarded by a jury; the "Madeira Belongs to All" Trophy is decided by the public vote.
The shows are fired over the open bay, so the whole seafront sees them. The festival had a budget of about €509,000 in 2026, 10% more than the year before.

Where to watch
The mistake is to watch from the old town and see half the show behind buildings. The bay is the stage.
The fireworks are fired over the bay of Funchal, from the pier, so the seafront is the natural place to watch: Avenida do Mar, the marina, the area around Praça do Povo and the hotels along the bay. Arrive well before 22:30 on a contest night to find a place.
Higher up, the city's slopes give a view of the whole bay from the viewpoints and terraces above the centre. From the water, a boat trip gives a view back from the bay, but check whether a cruise runs during the show before you book it; most boat trips run in the daytime or at sunset.
Getting back is easy on foot from the centre. From further out, the city buses, €1.45 on a GIRO card or €2.05 on board, and the taxis, which work to a table of fixed fares, cover the trip.

Summer Sunsets and the arts week
People often think the festival is only on Saturdays. The market and the arts run through the week.
The Summer Sunsets market runs through June, from Thursday to Sunday, in the garden beside Praça do Povo, with music and a section of traditional Madeiran food. In 2026 it opened on 5 June with 13 stalls. It is the easiest evening of the festival: a meal by the sea, music, and no need to wait for a show.
The Regional Arts Week turns the city centre into a space for music, dance, singing, movement and film. In 2026 it reached its 15th edition, around the central square and the Municipal Garden, near Avenida Arriaga.
The festival also brings circus and multimedia shows to the city, and a Bread Fair by the Lions Club, spreading events through the month.

Visitors often stay on the seafront and miss the two events that happen away from it.
The "Opera at the Peak" nights are held at the Fortaleza do Pico, the fort on the hill above the centre: four nights of music and fireworks. In 2026, its third edition, the nights fell on 6, 13, 20 and 27 June, the same Saturdays as the pyromusical shows.
In Machico, on the east coast, the Sixteenth Century Market is held each year in the Largo da Praça, recreating the time of the island's discovery with products, handicrafts, food and drink, and games. Machico is where Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed in 1419, and it was Madeira's first capital. It is about 23 minutes from Funchal by road.
In 2026 the market opened the festival month, with a pyromusical show in Machico Bay on 5 June.

The mistake is to plan the week and forget the Saturday. Build the stay around the show you want.
June is busy. Hotel occupancy in the region was 74.3% in June 2025, so book early, especially for a room with a view of the bay on a contest weekend. A room in the centre means walking to the seafront and back.
By day, June is the start of the beach and boat season: the sea reaches about 20.1 °C, the Lido's bathing season opens, and five of Funchal's bathing areas carry a Blue Flag in 2026. The mountains are at their most accessible, with the north side drier than in any month before summer.
Accommodation in Funchal adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Before you go
People often find a programme online from a past year. Check the one for your year.
The contest countries, the opera nights and the closing shows change each year. The tourism board publishes the dates and the programme on the Visit Madeira festival page, and the Madeira events calendar lists each day's events.
For a first visit in June, one contest Saturday and one Summer Sunsets evening give the festival's two sides: the show and the market. With more time, add the opera at the Pico, the arts in the centre and a trip to Machico.
For June's weather, see June in Funchal, and for the other festivals of the year, the festivals calendar. The fireworks tradition returns at the end of the year with the New Year's Eve fireworks.
