The pr8 hike madeira walkers remember is the one without trees: the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, a path along the bare, narrow peninsula at the island's eastern tip, with the sea on both sides. It is about 4 km each way from Baía d'Abra to Casa do Sardinha, rated moderate and about 2 hours 30 minutes there and back.

It is the opposite of the levadas. There is no forest and no channel to follow, the path climbs and drops between 23 m and 126 m above the sea, and the views reach the north and south coasts at once. The start is about 34 minutes from Funchal by road, and a bus goes there.

Baía d'Abra, the start

Walkers sometimes stop at the first viewpoint on the road and take it for the trail. The trail starts further on, where the road ends.

The ponta de sao lourenco madeira hike begins at the Baía d'Abra car park and bus stop, at the end of the road east of Caniçal. By road it is 33.0 km from Funchal, about 34 minutes. On the way in, the road passes the Ponta do Rosto viewpoint, pinned first on the map, before it reaches the start.

The whole peninsula is a protected area, the Área Protegida da Ponta de São Lourenço, managed by the IFCN. PR8 is a classified trail, so the standard fee applies: €4.50 for visitors over 12, booked and paid on the SIMplifica portal, with children 12 and under exempt. The IFCN's page on trail fees has the rules and the combined rates, and the IFCN's page on the protected area explains what it protects.

Book before you set off, and check the official trail page for a closure notice on the day.

The route to Casa do Sardinha

The usual mistake is to read 126 m as flat. The path is short on height but not on effort: it climbs and drops between 23 m and 126 m, again and again, along the peninsula.

The pr 8 hike madeira walkers follow runs east from Baía d'Abra along the peninsula to Casa do Sardinha, the warden's house near the end, and back the same way. There are no trees to hide the view: the north coast is on one side and the south coast on the other.

The protected area is known for its birds. The trail passes one of the region's largest gull colonies, and shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels live here; with luck, the monk seal can be seen from the coast.

Casa do Sardinha is the turning point, and the only shelter on the trail. Rest there before the walk back, which is the same distance in the same sun.

Sun, wind and when to go

People dress for the forest trails and get burnt here. PR8 has no shade, and it is exposed to the wind along its whole length.

Avoid the middle of the day in summer. The only shelter on the way is at Casa do Sardinha, at the end, so the walk out in full sun is the hard part, not the distance. Take a hat, sun cream, more water than a 2-hour walk seems to need, and a layer for the wind.

The peninsula is on the dry, eastern end of the island: Machico, the nearest town, averages about 710 mm of rain a year. That makes PR8 a good choice on a day when the mountains are in cloud or rain.

Early morning and late afternoon are the cooler hours. Shoes with grip help on the climbs and descents, and on the ridge keep to the path, away from the cliff edges.

Ponta do Rosto and the road in

Visitors short on time often think the peninsula is only for hikers. It is not: the first view comes before the trail, from the road.

The ponta de sao lourenco viewpoint madeira drivers stop at first is Ponta do Rosto, on the road to Baía d'Abra, with the peninsula ahead. It is on the road, so it suits anyone who cannot or does not want to walk PR8.

From Funchal without a car, bus 113, run by SAM, goes to Baía d'Abra; the ride takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. The SIGA timetable for line 113 has the departures and the last bus back, which sets the length of the day.

With a car, the day is short and flexible: 34 minutes each way, 2 hours 30 minutes on the trail, and time left over for Machico or Caniçal.

Steep reddish-brown volcanic cliffs dropping into the blue sea at the eastern tip of the island.Ponta do Rosto offers immediate views of the peninsula for those not wishing to walk the full PR8 trail.

Guided, or on your own, and Machico after

Walkers often book a guided tour for a trail they could walk alone. On PR8 that choice is real, because the path is clear and the bus goes to the start.

On your own, the ponta de sao lourenco madeira hiking trail needs only the fee, the timetable and water. A transfer saves the bus; a guided day adds a guide; a boat trip from Machico shows the peninsula from the sea instead. Some products include the trail fee and some do not, so read what you are buying and book the fee yourself if it is missing.

On the way back, Machico is 23 minutes from Funchal by road and close to the peninsula. Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed here in 1419, and it was Madeira's first capital. Three of its beaches, Banda d'Além, Prainha and Ribeira do Natal, carry a Blue Flag in 2026, which makes it the obvious place for a swim after the walk.

For every classic trail and its fee, see the hiking hub; for the forest walks, the levada walks page.
