Visitors weighing car rental madeira quotes against tour prices often ask the same thing first: is a car worth it here? For much of the island, yes. Most of the sights are a short drive from Funchal, from 14 minutes to Câmara de Lobos to 56 minutes to Porto Moniz, and some trailheads, Rabaçal and Fanal among them, have no regular bus at all.
For a stay in Funchal itself, no. The city centre is best on foot, the buses cover the rest, and parking costs money in the centre.

Do you need a car?
The common mistake is to hire a car for the whole stay and leave it parked for half of it.
Renting a car in madeira makes sense for the days you leave Funchal. The trailheads for PR6 at Rabaçal and PR14 at Fanal have no regular bus, and a car turns the north coast, Porto Moniz and the west into easy day trips. It also lets you start a hike at dawn and come back when you like.
In Funchal a car is mostly a cost. The centre is compact, and the city buses of Horários do Funchal cost €2.05 on board or €1.45 a trip on a pre-paid GIRO card, with day tickets from €4.95. Some day trips are on the bus network too: line 103 runs to Ribeiro Frio and Santana, and a bus goes up to Pico do Areeiro.
The usual answer is a car for part of the stay: two or three days for the west, the north and the mountains, and the rest on foot, by bus and by tour. The page on whether you need a car in Madeira works through the choice in detail.

Licences and the rules of the road
Drivers from outside Europe often worry that their licence will not be accepted. For US and UK drivers, it will.
To rent a car madeira drivers from the United States may use their US licence for up to 185 days if they are not residents of Portugal. An International Driving Permit, from AAA or the National Auto Club, is advised but not required by law. UK drivers can use a photocard licence; holders of an old paper licence may need a photocard or an International Driving Permit. Each rental company sets its own age and deposit rules, so check them when you book madeira funchal airport car rentals or a city pickup.
Traffic drives on the right, and seat belts are compulsory. The general speed limits for cars are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on motorways, and posted signs override them.
The US Embassy's page on driving in Portugal and the UK travel advice have the details for each country.

Airport or city pickup
People often collect the car at the airport by habit, then pay for days it sits outside the hotel.
Car rental funchal airport pickup suits a stay that starts outside the city, or an early drive west or north on the first day. Madeira Airport is 18.6 km from central Funchal, about 20 minutes by road, and a car there saves the transfer.
For a stay that starts in Funchal, the alternative is the Aerobus into the city, €6.70 on board, with departures from the airport from 08:30 to 22:00 and about 50 minutes to the end of the route, and a car collected in the city only for the days you need it. That is often the way to cheap car rental madeira funchal airport comparisons miss: fewer days, not a lower daily rate.
Plan for the wind as well. Strong wind at Madeira Airport regularly cancels and diverts flights; on 5 March 2026, seven were cancelled and five diverted. A pickup time that can move, and a flexible return, avoid paying for a car you cannot collect. The airport's own site shows live arrivals and departures.

Parking in Funchal and at the trailheads
The mistake is to plan the drive and forget the stop. In Funchal, parking in the street is paid.
Whether it is car hire madeira funchal airport or in the city, the car will need a space in the centre. Funchal has 1,602 paid street spaces in four zones, priced per hour at €1.83 in the yellow zone, €1.38 in the green, €0.76 in the red and €0.54 in the brown. The meters take coins, and the iParque app lets you start and stop the payment from a phone, paying only for the time used. The Frente MarFunchal parking page shows the zones.
Outside the city, the trailheads have their own rules. Parking at Queimadas, the start of PR9, costs €2 an hour. At Rabaçal, a shuttle runs from the car park on the ER105 down to the trailhead, reported at about €3 one way. At Pico do Areeiro, about 30 minutes from Funchal, the car park is at the start of PR1; the full crossing ends elsewhere, so a car there means walking back or arranging a lift.
The expressway runs through modern tunnels, but away from it the roads are slower, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
Parking at Pico do Areeiro is located at the start of the PR1 trail, about 30 minutes from Funchal.Fuel, costs and the alternative
Visitors often compare only the daily rate. Fuel, parking and the days the car stands still decide the real cost.
Fuel prices in Madeira have a regional maximum, set weekly and changed on Mondays. For the week of 21 to 27 September 2026, the maximum was €1.984 a litre for 95 petrol and €2.077 for road diesel. The distances are short, so fuel is rarely the largest part of a bill: Porto Moniz, one of the furthest points, is 48.4 km from Funchal.
The alternative to madeira car rentals for the long days is a tour. A 4WD day to Porto Moniz and Fanal, a west-coast day to the waterfalls, or an east-side day to Pico do Areeiro and Santana covers the drives that most people hire a car for, with someone else on the mountain roads. For the trails, a transfer drops you at the start and collects you at the end, which suits one-way walks like PR1 better than a car does.
A common plan mixes both: a car for two or three days of free exploring, tours for the days with the hardest roads, and the bus or your feet in Funchal.
