Christmas and New Year in Madeira

Christmas and New Year in Funchal: the season from 1 December to 10 January, the market night on 23 December, dawn masses, the record fireworks and Epiphany.

Visitors planning Christmas or New Year in Madeira usually have one image in mind: fireworks over Funchal bay at midnight. That show is real, and famous, but it is the end of a season that starts a month earlier and runs into January.

The season runs from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. In between come the dawn masses of mid-December, the market night at the Mercado dos Lavradores on 23 December, a Christmas market and an ethnographic village in the city, the New Year's Eve fireworks, which in 2006 Guinness World Records recognised as the largest fireworks display in the world, and the Epiphany hymns and the Three Kings in early January. The bay fills with ships too: for 2025-26, 11 cruise ships and a sailing ship came for the night of the fireworks, adding their lights to the view.

The season

The common mistake is to arrive on 30 December and see only the fireworks. The season has a month of traditions before them.

The Christmas and New Year festivities run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. From the second half of December until Christmas Eve, Madeirans rise at dawn for the Missas do Parto, the dawn masses, and afterwards gather in the church squares, where carne de vinha d'alhos sandwiches, pork marinated in wine and garlic, are served.

In the city, a Christmas market and an ethnographic village, at Largo da Restauração, bring crafts, food and music to the centre. The Placa Central, the central walkway of Avenida Arriaga, is the heart of the street entertainment.

The weather is mild but it is the wettest month: in December Funchal averages a high of 21.0 °C and a low of 15.5 °C, with 94.8 mm of rain, and the sun shines about 151 hours, the least of the year.

The market night, 23 December

People often visit the market on a weekday morning and never see it at its liveliest. On 23 December it becomes a night-time festival.

The Noite do Mercado, the market night at the Mercado dos Lavradores, is the best known of Madeira's traditional Christmas nights. On 23 December the market stays open into the night, and the fish hall fills with carol singing, around 23:00.

It is one of the Christmas nights Madeirans themselves keep, and visitors are welcome to join the crowd.

On an ordinary day the market opens Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00 and on Saturday to 14:00, and closes on Sundays and public holidays, so check the dates around Christmas before planning a daytime visit. The guide to the Funchal market covers it through the year.

The New Year's Eve fireworks

The mistake is to think the fireworks are a short burst over the harbour. They cover the whole amphitheatre of the city.

At midnight on New Year's Eve, Funchal's fireworks light the bay for eight minutes, fired from nearly 60 launch points. For 2025-26 there were 58, reported as 26 on the amphitheatre of hills around the city, 25 along the seafront and 5 on boats in the bay, with about 22 tonnes of fireworks and 97,000 shots. In 2006 the show was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest fireworks display in the world.

The rest of the archipelago celebrates too. Porto Santo fires its own from the Cais Velho and the Miradouro da Portela, Machico holds a concert in the Largo da Praça, and the Lobo Marinho ferry holds its own celebration aboard.

The bay fills with ships too. For 2025-26, 11 cruise ships and a sailing ship came for the night, with about 30,000 people aboard, 22,000 of them passengers; three berthed in the port and the rest anchored in the bay, adding their lights to the view.

Where to watch

People often squeeze onto the seafront and see only the nearest launch points. The show is best seen from a little distance.

Because the fireworks are fired from the hills and the seafront all around the bay, a raised place with a view over the whole bay shows the full picture. Parque de Santa Catarina, the park above the marina, has wide views over the bay of Funchal. The seafront avenues are the closest, and the busiest.

From the water, a catamaran or boat trip puts you in the bay itself, with the launch points around you. Several operators sell New Year's Eve cruises from Funchal; book early.

After midnight, the centre is crowded, and the Placa Central of Avenida Arriaga has street entertainment. Walk if you can: the taxis, which work to a table of fixed fares, are in demand, and the city buses follow their holiday timetables.

Epiphany and the end of the season

Visitors often leave on 1 January. The season goes on for another ten days.

On 5 January at 19:00, the hymns of the Epiphany, the Cantar dos Reis, are sung at Praça do Povo, on the seafront. On 6 January, the arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated, and the Bolo-Rei, the kings' cake, is eaten. The season closes on 10 January.

These are quieter events than the fireworks, and they show the local side of the season: music in the square, families, and the traditions that run through the whole of the Madeiran Christmas.

January is a good month to stay on: the crowds of New Year's Eve are gone, hotel occupancy in the region was 54.1% in January 2025, the second lowest of the year, and the days in Funchal are still around 20 °C.

Planning a stay

The mistake is to book late. With the fireworks, the cruise ships and the holidays, the last week of December is one of the busiest in Funchal.

Book rooms, New Year's Eve cruises and restaurant tables early. A room with a view of the bay is the easiest way to see the fireworks: no crowds, no journey home. Otherwise, a room in the centre means walking to the seafront or Santa Catarina and back.

December is the wettest month in Funchal, so pack a waterproof and a warm layer for the evenings, which average about 15.5 °C. The sea is still about 19.5 °C, warmer than the night air.

Plan the days around the dates that matter: the dawn masses and the market night before Christmas, the fireworks at midnight on 31 December, and the Epiphany on 5 and 6 January. Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Before you go

People often find last year's programme online. Check the dates for your year.

The season's dates and events are published by the tourism board on the Visit Madeira Christmas and New Year page, and the Madeira events calendar lists each day's programme. Weather can affect the night: between November and December 2025, 10 cruise calls at Funchal were cancelled because of bad weather, so a flexible plan helps.

For December's weather, see December in Funchal, and for the other festivals of the year, the festivals calendar. The Atlantic Festival in June brings the island's other great fireworks season, with a contest over the bay on its Saturdays.
