Visitors in Funchal in early July often hear jazz drifting from a park and wonder where it comes from. It is the Funchal Jazz Festival, organised by the municipality, and much of it is free.
The festival has two stages. First come the free concerts in the Funchal Municipal Garden, in the centre, on Avenida Arriaga; then the ticketed main nights in the Santa Catarina Park, above the marina, with international names. In 2026, its 26th edition, the Municipal Garden nights ran from 6 to 8 July and the Santa Catarina nights from 9 to 11 July, at 21:30, with tickets at €15 a night or €40 for all three. Both stages are in the centre of the city, the Municipal Garden on Avenida Arriaga and the Santa Catarina Park above the marina.

Two stages, two kinds of night
The common mistake is to buy a pass for the park and miss the free nights in the garden.
The festival opens in the Funchal Municipal Garden, in the heart of the city on Avenida Arriaga. In 2026 the garden's concerts, from 6 to 8 July, were free, and they are where the island's own musicians play: students and graduates of the Conservatório, the Madeira school of the arts, among them.
The main nights follow in the Santa Catarina Park, the green park above the marina with views over the bay of Funchal. These are the ticketed concerts, with the headliners, starting at 21:30.
The two stages make two kinds of evening. The garden is informal, central and open to anyone passing by; the park is a concert night, with a stage and an international line-up. A visitor with a few days can do both.
The Funchal Jazz Festival opens with free concerts in the Funchal Municipal Garden on Avenida Arriaga. The 2026 line-up
People often assume a small island festival books only local acts. The main nights mix the island's musicians with names from the international scene.
On 9 July 2026, the Santa Catarina stage opened with the Duarte Ventura Quintet and vibraphonist Joel Ross with his group Good Vibes. On 10 July came saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins with his quartet, and Joe Lovano with pianist Antonio Faraò in "Explorations". On 11 July, the singer Ledisi played, and the festival closed with pianist Jason Moran and the Orquestra de Jazz do Funchal.
That pairing of a guest with the city's jazz orchestra is a feature of the festival: the 2024 edition also featured the Orquestra de Jazz do Funchal, and almost 70% of the festival's more than 60 artists were from Madeira or living on the island, many trained at the Conservatório.
The 2027 line-up and dates had not been announced by September 2026; the 2026 programme was presented in June.

The mistake is to leave the tickets to the last minute. Buy the park nights ahead to be sure of a place.
For the Santa Catarina nights in 2026, a ticket cost €15 a night and a pass for all three nights €40. The Municipal Garden concerts were free. Tickets are sold at MEO, FNAC and Worten shops and at the park gate on the day, and online through Blueticket.
Prices change little between years but do change: in 2024, the four park nights cost €15 each for three of them and €10 for the last, with a €35 three-day pass. Check the festival's site for the current year.
A pass is worth it for anyone staying all three nights; for one or two, single tickets work. Arrive before 21:30 for a good place.

Around the concerts
People often think the festival is the evening concerts only. In 2026 it filled the days too.
Around the main stages, the 2026 programme had free concerts in the Municipal Garden auditorium from 6 to 8 July, street concerts by the Funchal Jazz Rhythm Kings from 6 to 10 July, jam sessions from 6 to 11 July, and masterclasses at the Conservatório, the Madeira school of the arts, from 10 to 12 July.
The street concerts are the easiest way to catch the festival by chance: in the centre, and free. The jam sessions suit musicians and late-night listeners. The masterclasses at the Conservatório are for students and players who want to learn from the visiting musicians.
The festival is organised by the municipality of Funchal. In 2024 its budget was €170,000, for more than 60 artists across the week.

The parks
The mistake is to think the venues are concert halls. Both are gardens in the middle of the city.
The Municipal Garden sits on Avenida Arriaga, the main avenue of the centre, a short walk from the cathedral and the seafront. Its auditorium hosts the free concerts.
The Santa Catarina Park is a little west, on the rise above the marina, and it has wide views over the bay of Funchal. It is on the walk from the cruise terminal on the Pontinha pier into the centre, about 15 to 20 minutes from the pier. On festival nights it is where the stage goes.
From either park, the centre's restaurants are close, so an early dinner and a late concert fit together easily.

Planning a July stay
People often plan July as a beach month and fill every evening. Leave three evenings for the park.
July in Funchal is dry and warm: average highs of 25.4 °C, lows of 19.7 °C and 1.7 mm of rain in the whole month, so the outdoor concerts rarely need a plan B. The sea is about 21.6 °C, and the Lido's bathing season is in full swing.
It is also busy. Hotel occupancy in the region was 75.6% in July 2025, second only to August, so book early. A room in the centre means walking to both parks and back after the late concerts.
By day, July suits the sea and the high trails: start the mountain walks early, when the air is cooler. The north side is at its driest, with 47.1 mm of rain at Queimadas in July, the least of any month, which makes it the easiest time for the long levadas such as PR9 to the Caldeirão Verde. PR1, the walk across the peaks from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, has been open every day since 26 June 2026, and a sunrise there followed by a concert in the park makes a full and very Madeiran day. Book the trail on the SIMplifica portal first. Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Before you go
People often find a past year's line-up online. Check the current one.
The festival publishes its programme and sells tickets on the Funchal Jazz Festival site, and the Madeira events calendar lists it with its dates. The line-up, the dates and the prices change each year.
For a first visit, one free night in the garden and one headline night in the park give the festival's two sides. With more time, catch the street concerts in the day and a jam session late.
For July's weather, see July in Funchal, and for the other festivals of the year, the festivals calendar. The Atlantic Festival's fireworks in June and the Wine Festival from late August frame the summer on either side.
