Visitors who want to pay once and stop counting often expect Funchal to be full of all-inclusive resorts. It is not. The all inclusive hotels Funchal has are two, both five-star, both on the western side of the Lido: the Enotel Lido, on the promenade, and the Pestana Royal, by Praia Formosa.

Most of the city's big hotels sell board options instead. On a sample search for two adults, two nights from 10 to 12 October 2026, four hotels offered breakfast, lunch and dinner, and 21 offered breakfast and dinner, from the five-star Pestana Vila Lido to four-stars at the lower end of the price range.

The reason to think twice about any board is the city itself: within 1 km of the Lido alone are 135 restaurants, and the old town has 96 within 450 m of its main street. For a week of day trips, half board often fits better than all-inclusive.

The Enotel Lido

The common mistake is to assume an all-inclusive resort in Funchal is a closed compound. The Enotel Lido opens straight onto the promenade.

The Enotel Lido is a five-star hotel all inclusive Funchal guests reach on the western part of the Lido, overlooking the Atlantic with direct access to the oceanfront promenade. Every room has a private balcony and ocean views. It has three themed restaurants, Portuguese, Italian and Asian, and the main Atlântico restaurant has a buffet and panoramic views of the ocean.

For the rest of the day, it has an indoor and an outdoor pool, a spa with steam baths and massage, a sauna, a gym, a games area, shops, a hairdresser and 24-hour medical services. For families, it lists a kids' club, a children's pool, a playground and a kid-friendly buffet. Parking is free, and the airport is 16 km away.

It scores 8.7 from 635 reviews, and its lowest rate for the two October nights was about €823.

From the door, the promenade runs east to the Lido bathing complex and the centre, and west to Praia Formosa.

The Pestana Royal

Visitors often book the Pestana Royal thinking it is in the centre. It is on the western edge, a 10-minute drive from the city centre.

The Pestana Royal All Inclusive Ocean & Spa Resort has 324 rooms, each with a view, with panoramic views of the slope of Cabo Girão, and it is a 2-minute walk from Praia Formosa. One buffet restaurant is open for every meal, and three themed restaurants take turns to open at dinner. There are two bars and terraces.

It has two outdoor pools, a spa with an indoor pool, a gym and three treatment rooms. Children have a playground and a kids' club, and adults billiards, mini golf and a tennis court.

It scores 8.1 from 558 reviews, and its lowest rate for the two October nights was about €1,134, the dearer of the two.

Praia Formosa, next door, carries a Blue Flag on the 2026 list. The CR7 museum is 4.8 km away and the marina 6.3 km, so for the centre, take a bus or a taxi.

Full board

People often think the choice is all-inclusive or nothing. Four hotels in Funchal sell full board, with lunch as well as breakfast and dinner.

In the October search, four places offered a rate with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Three are PortoBay hotels on the Lido: the Hotel Porto Mare, 8.9 from 1,067 reviews, and The Residence Porto Mare, 9.1 from 307, in the Vila Porto Mare resort with 5 pools and 4 restaurants in a tropical garden on the oceanfront, and the Suite Hotel Eden Mar, 8.7 from 541. The fourth is the Muthu Raga Madeira, a four-star on the Estrada Monumental, 7.4 from 1,639.

Full board covers the meals, and all-inclusive usually adds drinks: check what each rate includes at the table and at the bar before you choose. The rate is sold room by room, so compare it against the room-only rate for the same dates.

For a resort with several restaurants, full board keeps the variety; for a hotel with one dining room, a week of lunches there is a long week.

A four-star by the Lido with a half-board rate, 3 pools, 3 restaurants and a spa, 9.0 from 1,031 reviews.

Half board

The mistake is to pay for lunch you will never eat. On a day trip, lunch is on the road.

Twenty-one places in the October search offered a rate with breakfast and dinner, most of them the big hotels of the Lido and the centre. They include the five-star Pestana Vila Lido, 9.1 from 1,386 reviews, the Barceló Funchal Oldtown, 9.0 from 1,868, the Meliá Madeira Mare, the Pestana Grand, Quinta Mirabela, Quinta Funchal Gardens and Quinta da Bela Vista.

Among the four-stars, the Hotel Baía Azul, 9.0 from 1,031 reviews, with 3 restaurants and 3 pools, had the lowest rate of the leaders at about €368 for the two nights. The Views Baía and the Allegro Madeira, both adults-only, the TURIM Santa Maria and the Madeira Panorâmico also sell it.

Half board suits a week of island tours and hikes: breakfast before the pickup, dinner back at the hotel, and lunch wherever the day ends. The tours collect from hotels across the city, and none of the 44 jeep tours from Funchal, for one, includes lunch.

Choosing

Visitors often choose all-inclusive for the children and then eat out every night. Choose by how you will spend the days.

All-inclusive suits a stay spent mostly at the hotel: a family with small children at the pools and the kids' club, or a week of rest. Both resorts have a kids' club, and both are on the promenade side of the city.

Half board suits a stay of day trips, with breakfast and dinner at the hotel and lunch out. Room only, or breakfast only, suits a stay in the centre or the old town, where the restaurants are at the door: 149 within 500 m of the cathedral and 96 within 450 m of Rua de Santa Maria.

Compare the rates for your own dates: the board supplement changes the price, and the prices in the October sample are each hotel's lowest rate, not the rate with the board.

Visit Madeira lists the island's events, when the board rates rise with the rest. The restaurant guide covers eating out.
