Passengers stepping off at the funchal madeira cruise port usually have one question: how far is the town? Not far. Ships berth at the Pontinha pier, the long breakwater on the western side of the bay, and the city centre is about 1 km away, a walk of about 15 to 20 minutes, mostly flat, along the waterfront.

The port had a record 331 ship calls in 2025, with 746,257 passengers, and on a busy day several ships are in at once.

Short tours that fit a port day, starting near the waterfront.

From the pier into town

The usual mistake is to queue for a taxi for a walk that takes a quarter of an hour.

From the cruise terminal on the Pontinha pier, the city centre is about 1 km away. The walk runs along the waterfront, past the marina, the CR7 museum and the Santa Catarina gardens, into the historic centre, in about 15 to 20 minutes. It is mostly flat, which in Funchal, a city that climbs steeply behind the bay, is worth knowing.

Once in the centre, the sights are close together: the Sé cathedral, free to enter, the Mercado dos Lavradores, and the old town of the Zona Velha, where the Funchal-Monte cable car starts. Taxis are available at the port for those who prefer not to walk, and Madeira's taxis work to a table of fixed fares for set routes.

On a hot or wet day, or with limited mobility, a taxi or a tuk-tuk from the port saves the walk; on most days, walking in and riding back is the easiest plan.

How busy the port is

People often expect to have the old town to themselves. On a day with several ships in, they will not.

In 2025 the Port of Funchal had 331 cruise calls, a record and 4.74% more than in 2024, bringing 746,257 passengers and 278,185 crew. Ships stayed overnight on 122 nights, and 172,396 passengers slept aboard in the port. The port also handled 31 turnarounds, where a cruise begins or ends in Funchal.

To see the cruise ships in madeira today, check the official list of calls published by APRAM, the regional ports authority, which covers Funchal, Caniçal and Porto Santo. A day with two or three ships in means busier queues at the cable car and on the most popular tours, so book those in advance.

The busiest night of the year is New Year's Eve. For 2025-26, 11 cruise ships and a sailing ship came for the fireworks, with about 30,000 people aboard, 22,000 of them passengers; three berthed inside the port and the rest anchored in the bay.

Excursions for a port day

The mistake is to book a full-day island tour on a short call and spend the afternoon watching the clock.

Madeira cruise excursions work best when matched to the hours ashore. With two or three hours, stay in Funchal: the cable car to Monte, €16 one way or €22 return, the Monte church and garden, and the toboggan down to Livramento, about 2 km in about 10 minutes, from €30 for one. A tuk-tuk tour covers the same in about 1 hour 30 minutes.

With four or five hours, go a little further. Câmara de Lobos, the fishing village, is about 14 minutes by road; Cabo Girão, with its skywalk at 580 m above the sea, €5 for visitors over 12, is about 17 minutes. Pico do Areeiro, the high peak, is about 30 minutes up the mountain. A boat trip to see dolphins and whales from Funchal lasts about three hours.

With a full day and an evening departure, the west and the north become possible: Porto Moniz is about 56 minutes each way, Santana about 44. Keep a wide margin before the all-aboard time.

The schedule and the weather

Passengers often trust the itinerary printed months ahead. In Madeira, the sea can change it.

The madeira cruise ship schedule is published by APRAM on its site, with the ships expected at Funchal, their arrival and departure times, and the other ports of the region. It is the place to check which ships share your day and how long your call really is.

Weather is the one variable. Between November and December 2025, 10 cruise calls at Funchal were cancelled because of bad weather. A call can also be shortened, or a ship can anchor in the bay instead of berthing, as several did on New Year's Eve.

For a port day, that means booking tours with free cancellation where possible, and choosing a tour that starts and ends near the waterfront. For an overnight call, the evening in Funchal is a bonus for the old town and the seafront; the Monte cable car's last boarding is at 17:45, so ride it on the first day.

Practical details ashore

The mistake is to arrive on a Sunday for the market. Check the day of the week before you plan.

The Mercado dos Lavradores opens Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 19:00, on Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Sé cathedral is free to enter. The Funchal-Monte cable car runs daily from 09:00, and the cable car from Monte to the Botanical Garden from 09:00 to 17:00; the garden itself costs €10 for visitors over 12.

Cruise passengers and crew spend on average about €61.40 each ashore. The euro is the currency.

For a turnaround, when the cruise begins or ends in Funchal, the airport is 18.6 km away, about 20 minutes by road; the guide to getting from the airport to the city covers taxis, transfers and the Aerobus. The APRAM site has the schedule, and the guide to getting around Funchal the buses and cable cars.
