Visitors who come to Madeira in February often hear about Carnival only when the streets fill with feathers and sequins. Its biggest moments happen at night, in the centre of Funchal, along the seafront.

In 2027 Carnival runs from 3 to 14 February. Its centre is the Allegoric Parade in Funchal, floats and troupes in elaborate costumes moving along the seafront avenues, held on two nights, 5 and 6 February, for the first time. On Carnival Tuesday comes the Cortejo Trapalhão, a satirical parade through the centre in the afternoon. There is a children's parade in the city, carnivals in the other municipalities, and in Santana, the Festa dos Compadres, which opens the season. Standing along the route is free, so the parades cost nothing to watch, and the parade runs along the seafront avenues, so any stretch of them gives a view.

The dates

The common mistake is to book a week and miss the one night that mattered. Carnival's main events are on fixed days.

For 2027, the festival runs from 3 to 14 February, with the Allegoric Parade on 5 and 6 February in Funchal city centre. The 2026 festival ran from 11 to 22 February, and its parade was a single night, Saturday 14 February, at 20:00.

Carnival follows the church calendar, so the dates move each year. The pattern is steady: the Allegoric Parade on the Friday and Saturday or the Saturday before Carnival Tuesday, the children's parade on a morning of the same week, and the Cortejo Trapalhão on Carnival Tuesday itself.

February in Funchal is mild for a night outdoors: average highs of 19.9 °C and lows of 13.9 °C, the coolest nights of the year, with 72.4 mm of rain over the month. Bring a jacket for the evening parades.

The Allegoric Parade

People often wait in the old town for a parade that runs along the seafront. Know the route.

The Allegoric Parade, the Cortejo Alegórico, is the main event: floats and troupes in costumes covered in sequins and feathers, moving through Funchal city centre to music. In 2026 about 1,500 revellers in over a dozen troupes paraded, from 20:00, along Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses to Praça da Autonomia.

Among the groups are the Associação de Animação Geringonça, founded in 1987, and Palco d'Emoções, a samba school. In 2027 the parade is held on two nights for the first time, 5 and 6 February, which spreads the crowds.

Watching standing along the route is free. Grandstand seats are sold, reported at about €20; buy them in advance for a seat at the front, or arrive early to stand close to the barriers.

The Cortejo Trapalhão

The mistake is to leave on the Sunday. The last parade of Funchal's Carnival is on the Tuesday.

The Cortejo Trapalhão, the Slapstick Parade, runs on Carnival Tuesday in Funchal. It is a satirical parade based on cultural heritage, and it closes the Carnival period in the city.

In 2026 it took place on 17 February from 16:00, starting at the Harvey Foster roundabout and ending at Praça da Autonomia. It runs in the afternoon, which makes it easier for families than the night-time Allegoric Parade, and the same square marks the end of both.

For a visitor with only a few days, the Tuesday is worth keeping: the satire is local, but the costumes, the music and the crowd need no translation.

The children's parade and the Compadres

Families often think Carnival is only a night event. Two parts of it happen by day, and one of them is for children.

The children's carnival brings hundreds of revellers from the Funchal Community Development Association along Avenida Arriaga to the Municipal Garden. In 2026 the children's parade was on 13 February, from 11:00, with about 1,000 participants. In 2027 the children's carnival is on 4 February, from 10:30.

In Santana, on the north coast, the Festa dos Compadres opens the Carnival season, a tradition of more than 50 years. Santana is about 44 minutes from Funchal by road, and line 103 or 56 runs there by bus, so it makes a day trip combined with the village's typical thatched houses.

Other municipalities hold their own carnivals, because Carnival in Madeira is itinerant. In 2026, Calheta, Porto Moniz, Machico and Santa Cruz held theirs on 15 February, Câmara de Lobos on 16 February, and Caniçal and Porto Santo on 17 February.

Where to watch

The mistake is to arrive at the start time. For a good place, arrive early.

The main parade runs along the seafront avenues, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and Avenida do Mar, to Praça da Autonomia. The Trapalhão ends at the same square. Both are in central Funchal, a walk from the old town, the cathedral and the hotels of the centre.

Praça da Autonomia, at the end of both routes, is where the parades finish; the avenues along the way give more room. Grandstand seats are the easiest way to see the floats with children, or for anyone who would rather not stand for the whole parade.

The parade ran from 20:00 in 2026, so plan dinner before it or after it, and expect the centre to be busy. The city buses, €1.45 on a GIRO card or €2.05 on board, and the taxis, which work to a table of fixed fares, get you back to a hotel outside the centre.

Planning a February stay

Visitors often assume February is low season. For the Carnival days, it is not.

Hotel occupancy in the region was 61.8% in February 2025, up from 54.1% in January. Book early for a room within walking distance of the seafront, and for grandstand seats if you want them.

By day, February has plenty to do between the parades. The sea is cool, about 17.7 °C at Funchal, so it is not a beach month, but it is a good one for the city, the gardens, a boat trip on a calm day and the coastal walks of the drier east. The mountains are cold and wet in February, with 250.5 mm of rain at Queimadas, so keep the high trails for a clear forecast.

Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Families and practical tips

People often assume Carnival is too late at night for children. Part of it happens by day.

The children's parade runs in the morning, the Trapalhão in the afternoon, and only the Allegoric Parade runs late, from 20:00 in 2026 and 2027. For young children, a grandstand seat or a place near the start of the route makes the evening parade easier.

For the evening parade, eat before it starts or after it ends. Keep the practical things simple: a jacket for February evenings, which average about 14 °C at night, cash or a card for food along the route, and a plan for getting back, since the city centre is busy on parade nights and a taxi or a walk is quicker than driving.

The Visit Madeira Carnival page publishes each year's dates, and the Madeira events calendar lists the programme day by day. For February's weather, see February in Funchal, and for the other festivals, the festivals calendar.
