Madeira's main island has few sand beaches, and visitors who want a long walk on sand are usually pointed across the water. The Porto Santo beach Madeira is known for runs 9 km along the south coast of the neighbouring island, 71 km away, with a dune system behind much of it and sea at 24-25 °C in summer.

Porto Santo is small: about 5,100 people on 43.01 km², a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with one town, Vila Baleira. From Funchal the Lobo Marinho ferry takes about 2h15, and on most days it leaves at 08:00 and comes back from Porto Santo in the evening, so the island works as a day trip as well as a stay of a few nights. A Binter flight takes about 25 minutes.

The public ferry covers most visits; a private boat is the other way across, and the Desertas the other island trip from Funchal.

The beach and its sand

The common mistake is to picture the beach as just longer than Madeira's. It is a different kind of shore.

The Porto Santo beach Madeira golden sand visitors cross the water for is made of fragments of shells, coral and calcareous algae, unlike the black volcanic sand of Seixal on Madeira's north coast. The beach is classified as a Natural Monument and a geological site, and the municipality notes research by the University of Aveiro on the use of its sand in sand therapy for bone and muscle conditions.

Three beaches on the island carry a Blue Flag in 2026, Fontinha, Cabeço da Ponta and Ribeiro Salgado, on the 2026 Blue Flag list.

The long, open sand means you can walk for an hour and still be on the beach. On a day trip, pick one stretch near the town and stay on it: the ferry's evening return sets the limit.

The ferry

Visitors often plan the trip for any day of the year. The ship does not sail every day, and it stops for maintenance.

The Lobo Marinho leaves from the south quay of the port of Funchal and takes about 2h15. It carries 1,153 passengers and 145 cars, in first class and tourist class. Be at the passenger terminal 30 minutes before departure with an ID card, passport or driving licence; with a car, be at the car deck an hour before.

In October 2026, most days have a departure from Funchal at 08:00 and a return from Porto Santo at 19:00, 18:00 from 26 October, with a second sailing on some days. From 14 to 22 October 2026 there are no sailings at all, and the ship also stops for annual maintenance in January. Check the operator's timetable for your date before you plan anything else.

Fares change with the season and the offer. In October 2026 a one-way crossing starts at €33.90 per adult in tourist class, and the day cruise, the return crossing on the same day, starts at €72.02, or €77.90 with transfers at both ends. Children aged 5 to 11 pay half, and children under 4 travel free but still need a ticket.

Flying or sailing

The mistake is to assume the flight saves the day. It saves time in the air, not always on the island.

Binter flies between Funchal and Porto Santo in about 25 minutes, with about 14 flights a week in July 2026, the first leaving Funchal early in the morning and the last in the evening. Madeira Airport is 18.6 km from central Funchal, about 20 minutes by road, and you need to be there before the flight, so the door-to-door gain over the ferry is smaller than the flying time suggests.

The ferry has its own advantages: it leaves from the city itself, it carries cars, and the day cruise is priced for a return on the same day. For a first visit, it is the simpler choice. The flight suits a short stay of a night or two, or a return when the ship is not sailing.

Either way, check the weather. The crossing is open Atlantic, and strong wind regularly disrupts flights at Madeira Airport, as it did on 5 March 2026, when seven flights were cancelled and five diverted.

Vila Baleira and the Casa Colombo

People often land and go straight to the sand. The town has the island's museum, and its history.

Vila Baleira is the island's only town. Its museum is the Casa Colombo, the Museum of Porto Santo and of the Portuguese Discoveries, in the house held by tradition to have been the home of Christopher Columbus during his time on the island. The museum project began in 1989, was rebuilt in 2004 and extended in 2023.

It opens Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00; it is closed on Sundays and holidays. Entry is €6 for adults, €3 for ages 13 to 25 and over 65, and €10 for a family.

On a Sunday day trip, the museum is closed, so plan the beach and a walk instead.

Walks, golf and the season

Visitors often treat Porto Santo as beach only. The island has hills and a golf course.

PS PR1, the Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã, starts on the ER120 and runs 2.7 km each way, about 1:30 one way, rated moderate, between 450 m and 184 m. It passes the Rocha Quebrada, a large prismatic rock formation, through a Natura 2000 area. The fee is €4.50 for visitors over 12, the same as on Madeira's trails. The island's golf course has 18 holes over 6,434 m.

For the weather, summer is the island's dry season: July and August average about 1.5 days of rain each and more than 250 hours of sunshine, against about 9 rain days and 135 hours in December. The sea is at its warmest, 24-25 °C, in summer.

Visit Madeira covers the island's trails, and the Madeira beaches guide compares Porto Santo with the beaches on the main island.
