The pico to pico hike madeira walkers photograph has changed its rules, and many walkers still arrive with a plan made for the old ones. It is now one way, it must be booked, and it ends far from where it starts, which decides how you get there and back from Funchal.
It is PR1, the Vereda do Areeiro: 6.1 km from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest point of the archipelago at 1,862 m, across the central mountains. It is rated moderate and takes about 3 hours, through tunnels cut in the volcanic rock and past steep drops.
Transfers that drop you at Pico do Areeiro and collect you at the far end, the practical answer to a one-way walk.

One way, booked in advance
The mistake that ruins most plans is to expect to walk back. The pr1 hike madeira offers is now strictly one way, Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. The IFCN made it so after a rockfall on the trail and kept the rule when it reopened the walk every day from 26 June 2026, as its notice explains. Until then it had opened only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; it had been closed for works since August 2024.
Registration is compulsory. You book and pay on the regional government's SIMplifica portal before you go: the full route to Pico Ruivo costs €10.50 for visitors over 12, and it includes the branches beyond the summit. Children aged 12 and under pay nothing, and residents walk free but still register. The fees are on the IFCN's page on trail fees.
There is one exception to the one-way rule. The first stretch, from Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint, 1.2 km, may be walked there and back, at the standard €4.50 fee. You will also see the trail written as the pr 1 hike madeira guides list; it is the same walk.
Closures still happen. PR1 closed on 14 to 17 and 21 to 22 September 2026 for a boardwalk, and no bookings were possible for those days. Check the IFCN notices before you set out.

The first stretch from Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija allows a return walk for the standard fee.The start at Pico do Areeiro
People often underestimate how high the start is and dress for Funchal. Pico do Areeiro is one of the island's highest peaks, reached by road, and the walk begins beside its viewpoint, in the central mountain massif that forms part of the Natura 2000 network.
A madeira pico do arieiro hike starts by the viewpoint. From there the route passes the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and reaches the Pedra Rija viewpoint after 1.2 km; beyond Pedra Rija it is one way only. The tunnels along the route were cut in the volcanic tuff and once sheltered cattle and shepherds.
Getting to the start is the first logistical choice. By road it is about 30 minutes from Funchal. Horários do Funchal runs a bus from the city to Pico do Areeiro, listed on its own Pico do Areeiro page; the ride takes about 45 minutes, with returns reported at 12:15 and 19:00, which suits the partial walk to Pedra Rija and back rather than the full crossing.
Transfers that drop walkers at the top before dawn are a common product, because many people want sunrise from the peak before they walk.

Pedra Rija and the stepped ridge
Walkers who come for one photograph often do not realise where it is taken. The stepped ridge people call the Stairway to Heaven lies by Pedra Rija, near the start, and the name is a nickname, not an official one.
The pico do arieiro stairway to heaven madeira photographs show sits on the section that may still be walked both ways. That makes the partial route, Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija and back, a sensible choice for anyone who wants the view without the full crossing and the transfer it needs. It costs the standard €4.50 rather than €10.50.
For the full walk, Pedra Rija is where the one-way section begins. From there the route continues across the massif towards the mountain hut, the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo, and the summit just above it.
A madeira pico ruivo hiking day does not end at the summit, and that is the second planning mistake. The summit is not a road end, and the way off is a separate trail.
The Stairway to Heaven has its own page, with where exactly the ridge is and how to see it.

The summit and the way down
Most people plan the pico do arieiro to pico ruivo hike madeira offers as a line on a map and forget the second line. From the summit, the usual way down is PR1.2, the Vereda do Pico Ruivo, 2.8 km to Achada do Teixeira, where the Homem em Pé rock stands; it takes about 1:30 there and back.
Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 m, is the highest point of the archipelago. The mountain hut below it, the Casa de Abrigo, is the last building on the route. From there the path to Achada do Teixeira ends at a car park on the regional road, and that car park is where your lift has to be.
The options are a car you left there, a taxi you booked, or a transfer company that drops you at the start and collects you at Achada do Teixeira. There is no bus from Achada do Teixeira in the sources. Arrange it before you set off, not from the summit.
The pico do arieiro viewpoint madeira visitors photograph at the start is a road end; Pico Ruivo is not. Plan the day from its end, not its start.

Planning the day
The common error is to plan PR1 like a walk near town. It is a mountain day, and the start, the end and the drive shape it.
A madeira pico do arieiro hiking day needs four things fixed in advance: the SIMplifica booking, a way to the start, a way back from Achada do Teixeira, and a check of the IFCN notices on the morning. Add the partial route as a fallback: if the full crossing is closed or the weather turns, Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija and back is a shorter day on a two-way section.
Wear shoes with grip, carry water, food and a warm layer, and bring a torch for the tunnels. The route is high and exposed, and the tunnels and drops that make it famous also make it slow in bad weather.
For the other classic walks, their fees and how they compare, see the hiking hub. For the SIMplifica booking in detail, see fees and bookings.
