Visitors who come to Funchal in May are often surprised to find the city covered in flowers, and then find they have missed the parade by a day. The Flower Festival runs for about a month each spring, but its best-known moments happen on a handful of dates.

In 2027 the festival runs from 29 April to 30 May, and in 2028 from 4 to 28 May. It opens with a flower exhibition, continues with children placing flowers on the Wall of Hope, and reaches its height with the Allegoric Parade, floats and dancers covered in flowers moving through downtown Funchal on two Sundays in May. Around them, flower carpets line Avenida Arriaga, a wall of flowers is built in its central walkways, and a market sells flowers and regional food.

The dates

The common mistake is to arrive at the end of May for a parade that happened at the start. The festival is long, but its main days are few.

The 2026 festival ran from 30 April to 31 May. For 2027 the dates are 29 April to 30 May, and for 2028, 4 to 28 May. The Allegoric Parade takes place on two Sundays in May: in 2026, on 3 and 17 May, the first year it was split into two dates; the 2027 programme gives 2 and 16 May.

The opening is the flower exhibition. In 2026 the 71st Flower Exhibition opened the festival on 30 April at Largo da Restauração, from 19:00 to 22:00; for 2027 its theme is "Ornaments and Flowers".

The weather suits it. May in Funchal averages a high of 22.0 °C with only 27.2 mm of rain and about 209 hours of sun, one of the driest and sunniest months before summer.

The Allegoric Parade

People often wait at the wrong street, or arrive when the floats have passed. Choose the spot and the time first.

The Allegoric Parade is the festival's centrepiece: floats decorated with flowers, and groups in flower costumes, moving through the streets of downtown Funchal to music. In 2026 each of the two parades had about a thousand participants and ran along Avenida do Mar, the seafront avenue, from 16:30. The parade is reported to have been part of the festival since 1979.

Reserved grandstand seats are limited. They are sold along the route, or in advance at the tourist office; buy early for a seat, or arrive well before the start for a good place standing.

The flower groups also perform at the Heliport, on the seafront, showing their costumes and choreography away from the crush of the parade route.

The Wall of Hope and the walls of flowers

The mistake is to think the festival is only a show to watch. Two of its moments are about taking part.

On a Saturday morning, children are invited to place a flower on the Wall of Hope, a wall built collectively as a symbolic appeal for peace. Children visiting with their families can join in.

On Avenida Arriaga, the main avenue of the centre, the central walkways hold the Wall of Solidarity, a wall of flowers built by the beneficiaries of social solidarity institutions. Along the same avenue, the flower carpets are laid out, patterns of petals on the ground, and stay through the festival.

Avenida Arriaga is in the heart of the city, a short walk from the cathedral and the seafront, so the carpets and the walls fit into any day in Funchal during the festival, not just the parade days.

The market and the car parade

Visitors often come for the flowers and stay for the food. The festival has a market for both.

The Flower and Regional Products Market sells flowers alongside regional sweets, bolo do caco, the flat garlic-butter bread, cider, craft beer and poncha, the local drink of sugar-cane spirit, honey and lemon. It is the easiest place to eat and drink during the festival days.

Near the end of the festival comes the Madeira Flower Classic Auto Parade, organised by the Clube de Automóveis Clássicos da Madeira. Classic cars decorated with flowers set off from Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and stay on display until 18:30. In 2026 the car parade ran on 10 May, from 16:30 to 17:30; the 2027 programme places the classic car event from 28 to 30 May at Praça do Povo, along Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and Avenida do Mar.

For a family, the car parade and the market make a gentler afternoon than the main parade's crowds.

The rest of the festival calendar

People often plan only the parade Sunday and miss the rest of the month.

Between the opening exhibition and the last parade, the festival fills the weeks with smaller events: the flower groups at the Heliport, the carpets and walls on Avenida Arriaga, the market, the car parade and concerts. In 2026, four Flower Concerts were held in places including Funchal, Calheta and Santana.

A stay of a week around one of the parade Sundays catches most of it: the exhibition or the Wall of Hope at one end, the parade in the middle, and the carpets and market every day.

Outside the city, the gardens are in flower too. The Madeira Botanical Garden, €10 for visitors over 12, and the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, €18 for an adult, are the obvious places to see the island's flowers growing rather than on a float.

Where to stay and how to get around

The mistake is to book a room outside the city and drive in on parade day. The centre is the place to be.

The parade route, Avenida do Mar, the carpets on Avenida Arriaga and the Heliport are all in central Funchal, within walking distance of each other. A room in the centre or the old town means walking to everything, without the parking: the city's paid street spaces cost €0.54 to €1.83 an hour depending on the zone.

May is busy. In 2025 the region's hotel occupancy was 72.3% in May, against 54.1% in January, so book early for the parade weekends.

The city buses help with the rest: €1.45 a trip on a pre-paid GIRO card or €2.05 on board. Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Planning the days

Visitors who come for the festival often have time for the island too. May is a good month for both.

Put the parade Sunday at the centre, and the exhibition or the Wall of Hope at one end. Walk Avenida Arriaga for the carpets on any day, and visit the market for lunch. On the other days, May's dry weather suits the levadas and the mountains: the north side is at its most walkable from May to September.

Pack for warm days, about 22 °C, and cooler evenings at the parade, and bring sun protection for the afternoon on Avenida do Mar.

The Visit Madeira festival page publishes each year's dates and programme, and the Madeira events calendar lists each day's events. For the weather, see May in Funchal, and for the other festivals of the year, the festivals calendar.
