Visitors who plan a trip around the madeira wine festival often picture one big party in one square. It is three weeks of events spread across Funchal and the vineyards: tastings and music in the city, and the grape harvest recreated in the countryside, at the end of summer.
In 2027 the festival runs from 22 August to 12 September. Its centre in Funchal is the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo, where wine producers pour and regional bands play; its high point in the country is the harvest festival at Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, with grape picking, a procession and grape treading. Around them come concerts in wineries, a week of European folklore, commented tastings, masterclasses and dinners paired with Madeira wine.

What the festival is
The common mistake is to expect a single event. The Wine Festival is a season.
It celebrates Madeira wine, a tradition of some 400 years, in the streets of Funchal and in the vineyards and cellars of the rural areas. The 2026 edition was organised by the regional government's Secretariat of Tourism, Environment and Culture, through the Regional Tourism Directorate, with a budget of €192,000.
The programme mixes three things. In the city, there is the Wine Lounge, the music and the evening concerts. In the country, there is the harvest, with its procession and the treading of the grapes. And across the island, there are tastings, masterclasses and dinners built around the wine.
It is also one of the busiest times of the year to be in Funchal. The organisers projected hotel occupancy of about 90% for the 2026 festival, the same as the year before, against a regional average of 76.7% in August 2025 and 74.7% in September.
The programme mixes city concerts with rural harvest processions and island-wide tastings. The dates
People often find last year's dates and book around them. The festival moves a little each year.
The madeira wine festival 2026 dates were 23 August to 13 September 2026. For 2027 they are 22 August to 12 September. Within those three weeks, the events have their own days: in 2026 the European Folklore Week ran from 23 to 27 August, the Wine Lounge opened on Thursday 27 August and stayed open to 13 September, and the harvest festival at Estreito took place on 12 September.
The pattern is steady: folklore at the start, the Lounge through the middle and end, and the harvest in the first half of September. Check the programme for the year before booking a single night around one event.
The weather is at its best for it. August and September are the warmest months in Funchal, with average highs of 26.8 °C in August and 26.6 °C in September and almost no rain in August, and the sea at about 22.6 to 22.9 °C, its warmest of the year.
The harvest festival at Estreito takes place in the first half of September when the weather is warmest. The Madeira Wine Lounge
The mistake is to look for the tastings in the lodges only. During the festival, the producers come to the square.
The Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo, on the Funchal seafront, is where visitors taste the wines and the food, to the sound of regional music groups. In 2026 it opened on 27 August and ran until 13 September, with 11 wine producers taking part.
Around it, the city programme fills the evenings. On 27 and 28 August 2026, a circus arts show called TerraUva played near Praça do Povo. The Madeira Bartenders Association ran a cocktail festival, with each day dedicated to one type of Madeira wine and how it works in a cocktail.
For a first taste, the Lounge is the easiest place to compare. The styles follow the grape on the label: Sercial is dry or extra dry, Verdelho medium dry, Boal medium sweet and Malvasia sweet, while Tinta Negra makes about nine in ten bottles. The Madeira wine guide explains the styles, the ages and the labels.

The harvest at Estreito
Visitors often stay in Funchal and miss the half of the festival that happens in the vineyards.
The Estreito de Câmara de Lobos harvest festival, the Festa das Vindimas, recreates the hard but joyful work of the wine harvest. In 2026 it took place on 12 September, organised by ACRE, with traditional grape picking, an ethnographic procession and the treading of the grapes. It falls in the first half of September.
Estreito sits above Câmara de Lobos, the fishing town about 14 minutes by road from Funchal, so the harvest day is an easy half-day trip; a tour or a taxi saves driving after the tastings.
The concerts "Da Vinha ao Lagar", from the vineyard to the winepress, take the festival further into the country: in 2026 there were four, in four municipalities, held in wineries at sunset, with live music and tastings of wine made on site.

Concerts and folklore
The mistake is to think the festival is only for wine drinkers. Much of the programme is music and dance.
In 2026 the programme counted 38 performances and concerts. The European Folklore Week, from 23 to 27 August, brought groups from mainland Portugal and other European countries to perform, opening the festival. Regional music groups played at the Wine Lounge, and the four winery concerts closed the days in the countryside at sunset.
The tastings, masterclasses and dinners have limited places, so book them in advance if one of them is the reason for the trip.
For families, the square, the music and the folklore work well; the tastings and the evening dinners are for adults.

Tastings, dinners and the lodges
People often assume the festival replaces a lodge visit. It is the best time for one.
The 2026 programme had 10 commented tastings with Madeira wine producers, four masterclasses and 10 dinners paired with Madeira wine. The lodges add their own events: Blandy's held a Wine Festival dinner on 3 September 2026, at €250 a person.
Outside the festival programme, the lodges in Funchal run tours all year. At Blandy's Wine Lodge, the Lodge Tour costs €17 for about 30 minutes, the Premium Tour €23 for 45 minutes with the museum and three wines, and the Vintage Premium €59 with five wines including a Frasqueira; children from 6 to 17 pay €8.40. Blandy's has been in the Madeira wine trade since 1811.
A Frasqueira is a single vintage of one recommended grape, aged at least 20 years in cask; a Colheita, a single vintage aged at least five. Both are worth tasting at the festival, where several producers pour side by side. The wine lodges guide lists the lodges and their tours.

Planning a stay
The mistake is to book the room last. During the festival, Funchal is close to full.
With projected hotel occupancy of about 90% in 2026, book early, especially for the weekends and for a stay close to Praça do Povo. The Lounge is on the seafront, so a room in the centre or the old town lets you walk to it and back in the evening.
For the harvest day at Estreito, plan the trip out: Câmara de Lobos is about 14 minutes from Funchal by road, and a tour or a taxi saves driving after the tastings. Accommodation in Funchal adds a municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.
The festival fits with the rest of a late-summer stay: the warmest sea of the year for swimming, dry days for the levadas, and the long evenings for the city. The Visit Madeira festival page publishes the dates for each year, and the regional government's culture site the programme. For the other festivals through the year, see the festivals calendar.
