Parents who compare every Funchal Madeira family hotel pool in the photographs soon find the pool matters less than what surrounds it: a kids' club, a shallow children's pool, a room big enough for four, and a promenade outside rather than a steep street. Funchal has all of that, mostly in one place, the Lido, the resort strip of São Martinho.
Of the hotels and aparthotels in the city with a guest score of 7.0 or more, 33 list family rooms, 10 list a children's pool, and 4 a kids' club: Reid's Palace, the Pestana Grand, the Pestana Miramar and the Enotel Lido. Prices are from a sample search for two adults, two nights from 10 to 12 October 2026; a family room costs more, and prices move with the dates.
For most families, the Lido resorts are the answer, with the Vila Porto Mare, its 5 pools and a playground, at the top.

Kids' clubs
The common mistake is to assume every resort has a kids' club. In Funchal, only four list one.
Reid's Palace, the five-star on its clifftop in 10 acres of gardens, has a kids' club, a children's pool and a playground, 9.5 from 519 reviews for about €1,926 for the two nights. The Pestana Grand, a five-star on the rock of Ponta da Cruz with views of Cabo Girão, has a kids' club, a children's pool, a playground and a large saltwater pool, 8.3 from 877 for about €969.
The Pestana Miramar, a four-star built on the site of the historic Hotel Miramar, within walking distance of the beach and the centre, has a kids' club, a playground, babysitting and an outdoor and an indoor pool, 7.9 from 208 for about €780. The Enotel Lido, five-star and all-inclusive, has a kids' club, a children's pool, a playground and a kid-friendly buffet, 8.7 from 635 for about €823.

What a family hotel offers
Visitors often book the hotel with the biggest pool and find it too deep for small children. Check for a children's pool.
The family hotels in Funchal that list a children's pool are mostly on the Lido and the Avenida do Infante: Reid's Palace, the Savoy Palace, the Royal Savoy, NEXT, the Enotel Lido, the Pestana Grand, the Suite Hotel Eden Mar, The Residence Porto Mare and the Suite Hotel Jardins da Ajuda.
A Madeira family hotel swimming pool that suits toddlers is shallow and separate from the main pool; ask for photographs of it if the listing has none. The Royal Savoy has two heated lagoon-style pools, the Eden Mar a lagoon-style outdoor pool, and the Jardins da Ajuda indoor and outdoor pools with a children's pool.
Beyond the pool, look for a kid-friendly buffet, listed by the Savoy Palace, the Royal Savoy, the Meliá Madeira Mare, the Enotel Lido and the Jardins da Ajuda, among others, and babysitting, listed by 33 places above the floor.
Most of the family hotels have balconies, and several have family rooms of their own; a family of four can also take a suite or an apartment with a kitchenette.

Pools with the ocean
People often pay for a sea-view room and spend the day at a pool with no view. On the Lido, the pools face the Atlantic.
A Funchal Madeira family hotel pool ocean setting is what the Vila Porto Mare resort offers: its hotels, the Hotel Porto Mare and The Residence Porto Mare, share 5 pools in an extensive tropical garden on the Atlantic oceanfront, with 4 restaurants. The Hotel Porto Mare has a playground and babysitting, 8.9 from 1,067 reviews for about €757, and The Residence, 100 m from the ocean with kitchenettes in every unit and a children's pool, scores 9.1 from 307 for about €705.
The Royal Savoy, in the bay of Funchal, has two heated lagoon-style pools, private ocean access, a children's pool and a playground, 8.8 from 227 for about €817. The Pestana Grand's large saltwater pool looks towards the cliffs of Cabo Girão.
For older children, the Golden Residence, over Praia Formosa at the western end of the Lido, has an outdoor pool, apartments with a living area and a kitchenette, and babysitting, 8.6 from 2,400 reviews for about €352.

A five-star all-inclusive on the promenade with a kids' club, a children's pool and a playground, 8.7 from 635 reviews.
The Lido
The mistake is to think the Lido is a beach. It is a bathing complex on the rocks, with the resorts above it.
The Funchal Lido Madeira family hotels stand on the cliffs of São Martinho, where 24 of the city's 47 hotels are. Below them runs the seafront promenade, flat, to Praia Formosa in the west.
At the Funchal Madeira Lido family hotels ocean pools sit below the terraces: the Complexo Balnear do Lido, the public bathing complex with a Blue Flag in 2026, costs €6 a visit on the Frente MarFunchal tariff, in season from June to September. Ponta Gorda and Praia Formosa, the other two Blue Flag bathing areas nearby, are along the same promenade.
The sea is at its warmest in September, at about 22.9 °C, and above 20 °C from June to November; outside those months, the hotel pools, some of them heated, are where children swim.
Within 1 km of the Lido are 135 restaurants, and the Aerobus from the airport runs through the zone. The Lido guide covers it.
Most of the family hotels sit in the Lido, west of the centre.Waterfront, suites and value
Visitors often think a family must pay five-star prices for space. The suite hotels and aparthotels give more room for less.
The Funchal Madeira family hotels waterfront row runs along the promenade: the Pestana Promenade, with direct access to it and indoor and outdoor pools, 8.9 from 630 reviews; the Enotel Lido; and the Vila Porto Mare resort. The Vila Baleira, a four-star in the heart of the Lido with an outdoor pool, family rooms and babysitting, scores 8.0 from 1,591 for about €382.
For space, the Suite Hotel Eden Mar has a kitchenette in every unit, a lagoon-style pool, a children's pool and a tennis court, 8.7 from 541 for about €626. The Terrace Mar Suite Hotel, recently renovated, has a rooftop pool, kitchenettes, family rooms and a kid-friendly buffet, 8.6 from 683 for about €275, and the Florasol Residence, a three-star with a large outdoor pool, self-catering rooms and a playground, 7.9 from 1,191 for about €306.
The Suite Hotel Jardins da Ajuda, the most reviewed hotel in the city with 3,214 reviews, scores 7.9 for about €288.
For the island's sand beaches, Calheta, 39 minutes west, suits a day out: the Calheta guide covers it, and Visit Madeira lists the family events.

A four-star suite hotel on the Lido with a kitchenette in every unit, a lagoon-style pool and a children's pool, 8.7 from 541 reviews.
