Madeira volcanic pools at Porto Moniz

The Porto Moniz lava pools: €3 entry, 09:00-19:00 in summer, lifeguards, the free Cachalote pools, Seixal's pools and Laje beach, and 56 minutes from Funchal.

Swimming in Madeira is harder than it looks from the plane: the coast is cliff and rock, the sand beaches are few, and the open Atlantic is rough on many days. The Madeira volcanic pools answer that. At Porto Moniz, on the north-west tip of the island, the sea fills basins of black lava rock, so you swim in seawater with the waves breaking on the rocks outside.

The paid pools cost €3, open from 09:00 to 19:00 in summer, and have lifeguards on constant duty. At the entrance to the town, the Cachalote pools are free. Along the same coast, Seixal has more pools, a black sand beach and a pebble one.

Porto Moniz is 48.4 km from Funchal, about 56 minutes by road, and it makes a full day with the aquarium, the free pools and the Fanal forest on the way back.

The paid pools and what they offer

The common mistake is to picture a swimming pool with a lava border. These are the sea itself, held in rock.

The Porto Moniz natural pools are of volcanic origin, formed by lava cooling as it met the sea, and the shape of the rock lets seawater flow in all the time, so the water is renewed constantly. They are the municipality's emblem and one of the main sights of the north coast. The swimming area covers about 3,800 m², about 2 m deep, with about 3,210 m² of sunbathing area around it.

Around the water are a children's pool, a playground, changing rooms, a bar, a first-aid post, a car park and access for people with disabilities, and sun loungers and parasols can be hired. Lifeguards are on duty constantly.

Entry is €3 from the age of 3, free under 3, €1.50 with a student or senior card, and free with a disability card of 60% or more. The pools open from 09:00 to 17:00 in winter and to 19:00 in summer.

The Laje beach Porto Moniz Madeira visitors also find on this coast is different: a pebble beach in Seixal, unsupervised, called Jamaica Beach for the palms along its promenade. Swim there only when the sea is calm.

The free pools along the coast

Many visitors pay at the main pools without knowing that there are free ones on the same coast. There are several, each with less around it.

The Cachalote pools, at the entrance to Porto Moniz beside the restaurant of the same name, are also volcanic rock filled by the sea, and they are free. They are supervised through the bathing season, but the facilities are an outdoor shower and little else, with no full toilets.

East along the coast, in the parish of Seixal, the Clube Naval do Seixal pools are free, open from 10:00 to 19:00, with a solarium and loungers, a bar, showers and toilets, and kayaks and diving gear to rent. The Poças das Lesmas, near the Laje beach, are a free, sheltered bathing area with a bar, toilets and showers. Seixal's harbour beach, Porto de Abrigo, is black sand, free, with showers and toilets.

Between Seixal and Porto Moniz, at Ribeira da Janela, the river mouth has a free bathing area by a freshwater lake, with a solarium open from 09:00 to 19:00 and toilets with showers. And at Achadas da Cruz, a shingle beach lies at the foot of a steep cliff, with the remains of a shipwreck showing at low tide.

Volcanic pools nearer Funchal

The mistake is to think the north coast is the only place to swim in lava pools. Funchal has its own.

The Doca do Cavacas, also called the Poças do Gomes, is a complex of volcanic pools with access to the sea, in Funchal. It is run by Frente MarFunchal with the Lido, Ponta Gorda and Barreirinha, at a shared price: €6 for an adult, €2 for ages 7 to 17 and for pensioners, and free for children up to 6 with an adult, on the 2026 tariff.

For a short stay, that settles the choice. A morning at the Doca do Cavacas needs no drive and no day off from the city. Porto Moniz is the bigger site, with more water, the children's pool, lower prices and a day's worth of the north-west around it, but it takes about 56 minutes each way by road.

Families with young children weigh it differently. The Porto Moniz pools charge nothing under 3, have a children's pool and a playground, and keep lifeguards on duty, while the free pools along the coast have fewer facilities around them.

Getting to Porto Moniz

People often plan Porto Moniz as a quick trip. It is at the far corner of the island from Funchal.

By car, Porto Moniz is 48.4 km from Funchal, about 56 minutes without stops. Seixal, on the way, is 40.6 km, about 47 minutes, and Fanal, on the plateau above, 47.4 km, about 76 minutes from Funchal.

By bus, Rodoeste runs two lines from Funchal: the 80, which goes along the south-west coast by Calheta, and the 139, which goes through the middle of the island by São Vicente and then along the north coast. Porto Moniz is in fare zone H, and the fare depends on where you board. The lines were being renumbered in 2026, so check the times with the operator before you go.

A day tour takes the driving off your hands and usually adds stops you would not reach by bus in one day, such as Fanal.

The rest of the day

The mistake is to drive nearly an hour for a swim and leave. Porto Moniz has more.

The Aquário da Madeira stands in a replica of the São João Baptista fort, first built in 1730, and shows more than 90 native species; a standard ticket is reported at €7. The Centro Ciência Viva nearby has exhibits on the Laurisilva, the laurel forest that covers the island's northern slopes. Porto Moniz also holds a Blue Flag in 2026, on the ABAAE list.

On the way back to Funchal, the road up to the plateau passes Fanal, in the same municipality, a stretch of Laurisilva where fog is frequent because of the altitude. The Seixal guide covers the black sand beach on the way.

Check the sea before you go. The north coast faces the open Atlantic, and on rough days swells and currents make the sea hard to enter at the unsupervised beaches. A calm, sunny day in summer, when the pools stay open until 19:00, is the easiest.
