Travellers reading about Madeira find the same sights recommended to everyone, but a family, a couple, a solo walker and a group of friends need different things from the same island. The sights stay the same; what changes is the price, the pace, the transport and where to stay.
Families gain the most from the island's rules: free or cheaper tickets for children, short walks rated easy, and sea pools and a few sand beaches. Couples gain from its timing: sunset sails on the bay, wine lodges, sunrise above the clouds. Solo travellers gain from its buses and tours: Funchal on foot, interurban lines to several trailheads, and no guide required on any classified trail. Groups gain from private transport and shared prices, and need to book every walker on the trails. All four share one base, Funchal, and the same trail rule: each classified walk is booked ahead on a €4.50 ticket.

Families
The common mistake is to think an island of mountains is hard work with children. From Funchal, it is not.
Children up to 6 ride the Funchal-Monte cable car free, children up to 14 enter the Monte Palace Tropical Garden free with an adult, and children 12 and under walk the classified trails free, though they need a booking. The Botanical Garden costs €3 for children from 6 to 12, and the city buses charge about half from 6 to 12.
For walks, PR11 to the Balcões and PR6.1 to the Risco are short and rated easy. For swimming, the Lido has a youth entry of €2, the old town has a sea pool, and Calheta, Machico and Porto Santo have sand beaches. In the car, children under 12 cannot travel in the front seats. Two festivals are made for children: the children's carnival along Avenida Arriaga in February, and the Wall of Hope on a Saturday morning of the Flower Festival, where children place a flower as an appeal for peace.
The guide to Madeira with kids covers it all.
The children's carnival and the Wall of Hope are key family events held in Funchal during February.Couples
People often plan a couple's trip around a hotel and miss the hours that matter. On Madeira, the best moments are timed.
A sunset sail on the bay of Funchal lasts about three hours; a sunset catamaran goes west to Cabo Girão with a swim. The wine lodges run tours all year, and Blandy's has a private tour for two to four at €150 a person. A sunrise transfer climbs to Pico do Areeiro, and the walk to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and back, on a €4.50 ticket, takes in the stepped ridge known as the Stairway to Heaven.
Gardens and quiet places fill the afternoons: the Monte Palace garden, the Botanical Garden by a second cable car, the Quinta das Cruzes. For a few days apart, Porto Santo's 9 km beach is about 2 hours 15 minutes away by ferry. For the evenings, the fireworks on the Saturdays of June, the jazz nights in the Santa Catarina Park in early July and the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo from late August each make a night out for two.
The guide to Madeira for couples has the evenings and the bases.
Afternoon relaxation in Madeira often includes visits to the Monte Palace Garden or the Botanical Garden.Solo travellers
The mistake is to think Madeira needs a car and company. Alone, the buses and the tours work well.
Funchal is on foot and by bus: 59 urban routes, €1.45 a trip on a pre-paid GIRO card or €2.05 on board. Interurban lines run to Ribeiro Frio and Santana, line 103, to Santana, line 56, to Baía d'Abra for the Ponta de São Lourenço, line 113, and to Curral das Freiras, route 181. Tours and hiking transfers cover Rabaçal and Fanal, which have no regular bus.
No guide is required on any classified trail, and registration is compulsory for everyone. Madeira is widely described as low-crime; the realistic risks are the terrain, the weather, driving and hiking, so walk the long remote trails with a group.
The guide for solo travellers covers the rest.

Madeira: Enjoy a Guided Levada Walk in the Rabaçal Valley
★ 4.8 · 2,534 reviewsA guided levada walk at Rabaçal with pickup in Funchal, good for any traveller.
Groups
People often travel as a group and pay as individuals. Some costs are cheaper shared.
Private transfers and taxis are priced per vehicle: a taxi from the airport to central Funchal usually costs about €25 to €35 by day, little more per head for four than the Aerobus at €6.70. Of the Madeira tours on sale, 37 offer a private option and 29 a small-group one.
On the trails, every walker needs a booking on SIMplifica, in the same slot, and a rebooking after an official closure is made for a group of the same size. The toboggans take up to three in a basket, €60, and Blandy's private tour two to four people. For the parades of Carnival and the Flower Festival, grandstand seats are limited, so a group that wants to sit together should buy them early.
The guide for groups has the details.

Where each should stay
The mistake is to choose the area before knowing how the days will run. Match the base to the traveller.
Families and groups on a pool-and-sea holiday suit the Lido hotel zone, west of the centre, with the big seafront hotels, three Blue Flag bathing areas and the Aerobus route. Couples looking for quiet and views suit Santa Luzia, uphill from the old town, quieter and cheaper but steep, or São Pedro, central and calmer. Solo travellers suit the centre, around the Sé, close to the buses, the Aerobus stop on Avenida do Mar and the tours' pickups.
For evenings out, the old town is lively, packed with restaurants and bars, but cramped and pricey to stay in. The neighbourhoods guide compares the areas.

What stays the same for everyone
People often assume the rules differ for each kind of traveller. The basics do not.
Every walker on a classified trail books on the SIMplifica portal for a date and a time slot, and the fee, €4.50, or €10.50 for PR1 in full, is refunded only if the trail is officially closed. The market closes on Sundays and on Saturdays at 14:00, and the cathedral is closed to visits on Sundays and holidays. The cable car to Monte runs daily from 09:00, with the last boarding at 17:45.
The weather is the same for all: the mountains and the north are wet and often cloudy, the south coast far drier. Put the mountain days on the clearest mornings, whoever you travel with.
Accommodation in Funchal adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.

Planning the trip
The mistake is to plan by traveller type alone. Combine it with the length of stay and the season.
The itineraries set out plans from half a day to more than ten days, each from a Funchal base. The best time to visit Madeira covers the months: April to June and September for walking, June to October for the sea, November to April for winter sun. And the festivals calendar lists the events that suit each kind of traveller, from the children's carnival to the Wine Festival's evenings.
The IFCN's list of classified trails shows which trails are open, and the 2026 bus fare table lists every ticket.
