Parents planning Madeira often worry that an island of mountains and cliffs is hard work with children. From Funchal, it is easier than it looks: many of the best sights are free or cheaper for children, the city has two cable cars and a toboggan ride, several levada walks are short and rated easy, and the sea is warm enough to swim from June to October.
The island also has a few rules that help families. Children up to 6 ride the Funchal-Monte cable car free, children up to 14 enter the Monte Palace Tropical Garden free with an adult, and children 12 and under walk the classified trails free, though they still need a booking.
Two outings children remember, from central Funchal.

Children's prices
The common mistake is to budget full prices for the whole family. Many tickets are free or cheaper for children.
The Funchal-Monte cable car is free for children up to 6. The cable car from Monte to the Botanical Garden is free under 7, and €6 one way or €9 return for children from 7 to 14. The Madeira Botanical Garden is free under 6 and €3 for children from 6 to 12, against €10 for adults. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is free for children up to 14 with an adult.
On the city buses, children from 6 to 12 count as children and pay about half. On the classified walking trails, children 12 and under pay no fee, but they must be registered and booked on the SIMplifica portal like everyone else. At the Lido bathing complex, there is a youth entry of €2. At Blandy's Wine Lodge, children from 6 to 17 pay €8.40 on a tour.
The toboggan down from Monte seats up to three in a basket: €30 for one, €40 for two, €60 for three.

Sights children enjoy
Parents often plan museums and gardens that bore children. Some sights in Funchal are made for them.
The cable car to Monte and the toboggan down are the classic family outing: the ride up over the city, then about 2 km down to Livramento in about 10 minutes in a wicker basket driven by the carreiros. The Monte Palace garden, free for children up to 14, has paths through 70,000 m² of hillside.
In the city, the 3D Fun Art Museum in São Pedro, rated 4.6 from 1,449 reviews, and the Madeira Story Centre in the old town, with its interactive exhibits of the island's history, suit children better than the older museums. The CR7 Museum opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00.
At sea, a boat trip of about three hours looks for dolphins and whales off Funchal; the most reviewed has more than 10,000 reviews.

Easy walks for families
The mistake is to take children on a famous walk and turn back halfway. Choose one rated easy.
Two classified trails are short and rated easy. PR11, the Vereda dos Balcões at Ribeiro Frio, runs 1.5 km each way to a viewpoint, about 1 hour 30 minutes there and back, almost level between 870 m and 880 m; Ribeiro Frio also has a trout farm, running since 1960, and is on bus line 103. PR6.1, the Levada do Risco at Rabaçal, is 1.5 km each way, about 2 hours, and ends at the Risco waterfall, about 100 m high.
The Levada dos Tornos from Palheiro to Monte is longer, 4 km in 3 to 4 hours with lunch, but free and close to the city, and it ends at the cable car.
Longer walks, PR1 across the peaks and PR9 with its four tunnels, are for older children who walk well. The guide to choosing a levada sorts them by effort.

Beaches and swimming
People often assume Madeira has no beaches for children. It has 17 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, five of them in Funchal.
Most of the island's beaches are pebble or rock, with lidos and ladders into the sea, but a few are sand: Calheta and Machico are described as sand beaches, Seixal has natural black sand, and Porto Santo's beach runs for 9 km. Machico has three Blue Flag beaches in 2026.
In Funchal, the Lido bathing complex, with a youth entry of €2 and a Blue Flag, opens from June to September, and the old town's sea pool at Praia de São Tiago opens daily from 09:00 to 20:00. Porto Moniz, on the north-west coast, is known for its volcanic sea pools.
The sea is above 20 °C from June to October, and warmest in September, about 22.9 °C.
Porto Moniz is known for its volcanic sea pools which cost €3 to enter.Festivals for children
The mistake is to think Madeira's festivals are late-night events. Two are made for children.
During the Flower Festival, from 29 April to 30 May in 2027, children are invited on a Saturday morning to place a flower on the Wall of Hope, a wall built together as an appeal for peace. The flower parades run in the afternoon, from 16:30 in 2026.
In Carnival, from 3 to 14 February in 2027, hundreds of revellers from the Funchal Community Development Association parade in the children's carnival along Avenida Arriaga to the Municipal Garden; in 2026 the children's parade ran on 13 February from 11:00, with about 1,000 participants. The satirical Cortejo Trapalhão runs in the afternoon, on Carnival Tuesday.
The festivals calendar has the dates for every festival.
During the Flower Festival, children are invited to place a flower on the Wall of Hope.Safety on the trails and in the car
People often treat a level levada as a safe one for children. The danger is the edge.
The levada channels are typically 80 to 150 cm wide, and the path beside them is often narrower, with the slope falling away in places. Keep children on the inside, hold hands on narrow stretches, and turn back rather than squeeze past a group at an edge. Tunnels, as on PR9, need a torch. On PR8, the Ponta de São Lourenço, there is no shade, so avoid midday in summer.
In the car, children under 12 cannot travel in the front seats, and seat belts are compulsory. The speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside them and 120 km/h on motorways.
Madeira is widely described as a low-crime island; the realistic risks are the terrain, the weather, driving and hiking.

Where to stay and when to go
The mistake is to pick a hotel far from everything with small children. Pick one close to the sea or the centre.
The Lido hotel zone, west of the centre, has the big seafront hotels, the Lido complex and three Blue Flag bathing areas, and the Aerobus runs through it from the airport; it suits a family holiday built around the pool and the sea. The centre, around the Sé, puts the cable car, the old town and the market within a walk.
For a family trip, June to September gives the warmest sea and the Lido's bathing season; the Flower Festival in May and Carnival in February add events for children. Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night only for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights.
The neighbourhoods guide compares the areas. The cable car's site and the Botanical Garden cable car's site have the children's prices.
