Couples choosing Madeira often ask whether it is romantic or just scenic. It can be both, if the days are built around the right hours: sunrise above the clouds on the peaks, long afternoons in the gardens and the wine lodges, and sunset on the bay of Funchal.
For two, the island's best moments are small and timed. A sunset sail of about three hours on the bay. A tasting at a lodge in the city, or the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo during the Wine Festival. A dawn transfer to Pico do Areeiro. The Monte Palace garden on a quiet morning. Two nights on Porto Santo for its 9 km beach. Summer adds one more: on the first three Saturdays of June, the fireworks contest lights the bay for about 20 minutes a night.
Two evenings on the bay of Funchal, for two.

Sunset on the bay
The common mistake is to watch the sunset from the hotel balcony. Funchal's bay is best seen from the water.
A sunset sail from Funchal lasts about three hours, and the most reviewed has more than 2,400 reviews. A catamaran cruise west to Cabo Girão, with a stop to swim, is the other evening on the water; Cabo Girão's cliff rises 580 m above the sea.
On land, the viewpoints above the hotel zone look west along the cliffs for the sunset: the Nazaré viewpoint in São Martinho is rated 4.7 from 862 reviews, and the Jardim Panorâmico 4.5 from 1,252. In the city, the Santa Catarina Park, above the marina, looks over the whole bay.
The warmest sea for a swim on a sunset cruise is from June to October, above 20 °C, and warmest of all in September.
A sunset sail from Funchal lasts about three hours and offers views of the bay.Wine for two
People often visit a lodge in a hurry on the way to dinner. Give it an afternoon.
Funchal's wine lodges run tours all year. At Blandy's Wine Lodge, in the Madeira wine trade since 1811, the Lodge Tour costs €17 for about 30 minutes, the Premium Tour €23 for 45 minutes with the museum and three wines, the Vintage Premium €59 with five wines including a Frasqueira, and a private tour €150 a person for two to four people.
The styles follow the grape on the label: Sercial dry or extra dry, Verdelho medium dry, Boal medium sweet, Malvasia sweet. A Frasqueira is a single vintage of one grape aged at least 20 years in cask.
From late August to mid-September, the Wine Festival brings the producers to the Madeira Wine Lounge at Praça do Povo; in 2026 it had 10 dinners paired with Madeira wine, and Blandy's held its own festival dinner, at €250 a person. The Madeira wine guide explains the rest.
The styles follow the grape on the label, ranging from dry Sercial to sweet Malvasia.Sunrise above the clouds
The mistake is to sleep through the island's most spectacular hour. Once, set the alarm.
Sunrise transfers leave Funchal early for Pico do Areeiro, at 1,818 m, about 30 minutes by road, to watch the day break from high in the central mountains. The most reviewed sunrise transfer has more than 4,600 reviews.
From the viewpoint, walk the start of PR1 to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and back, 1.2 km each way, on a €4.50 ticket: the famous stepped ridge, known as the Stairway to Heaven, is on that stretch. For a longer walk, PR1 continues one way to Pico Ruivo, the island's highest point at 1,862 m, about 3 hours, on a €10.50 ticket, with a transfer at the other end.
Take warm layers: the peaks are far colder than the coast, above all at dawn.

Gardens and quiet places
People often rush the gardens between sights. They reward a slow morning.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden covers 70,000 m² of hillside above the city, with a tile collection and a museum, €18 for an adult; the cable car from the old town climbs to Monte, €16 one way or €22 return. From Monte, the second cable car runs across to the Madeira Botanical Garden, €10 for visitors over 12, 1,600 m in about 18 minutes.
The Quinta das Cruzes, in São Pedro, holds 500 years of art in an 18th-century villa with its gardens. The Fortaleza do Pico, on its hill, has panoramic views of the city and the sea.
For a walk together, the Levada dos Tornos from Palheiro to Monte, 4 km in 3 to 4 hours with lunch, needs no booking, and PR11 to the Balcões viewpoint at Ribeiro Frio is short and easy.

Festival evenings
The mistake is to discover the festival on the night. A few evenings are worth building a stay around.
On the first three Saturdays of June, the Atlantic Festival's fireworks contest lights the bay of Funchal for about 20 minutes each night; in 2026 the shows started at 22:30. The same festival holds opera nights at the Fortaleza do Pico. In early July, the Funchal Jazz Festival's main nights in the Santa Catarina Park start at 21:30, at €15 a night in 2026.
At the end of the year, the New Year's Eve fireworks over the bay last eight minutes at midnight, fired from nearly 60 launch points; New Year's Eve cruises put you in the middle of them. In 2006 the display was recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest in the world.

Restaurants, and Porto Santo
People often eat where the hotel suggests. The city's restaurant streets are worth the walk.
In the centre, near the cathedral, Armazém do Sal, listed in the Michelin Guide 2024, is rated 4.3 from 1,877 reviews, and Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira 4.7 from 2,492. In São Pedro, Rise & Dine serves brunch and fine dining, rated 4.9 from 2,435. The old town has 96 restaurants within 450 m of Rua de Santa Maria, for an evening out, and the island's own dishes are worth ordering: espetada, beef on a laurel skewer, black scabbardfish with banana, and a glass of Madeira wine or a poncha, cane spirit with honey and lemon, to finish.
For a few days away from it all, take the Lobo Marinho ferry to Porto Santo, from €33.90 and about 2 hours 15 minutes each way. Its beach runs for 9 km; two nights there turn the crossing into a short stay of its own.

Where to stay
The mistake is to choose the liveliest street for a quiet trip. Choose the area for the evenings you want.
For quiet and views, Santa Luzia, uphill from the old town, is quieter and cheaper, with better views, but steep. For a central but calm base, São Pedro, west of the cathedral, has the museums, the Pico fort and the Santa Catarina Park. For evenings out, the old town is lively and packed with restaurants and bars, but cramped and pricey to stay in. For a resort with the sea at the door, the Lido hotel zone has the big seafront hotels and three Blue Flag bathing areas.
Accommodation adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights. The neighbourhoods guide compares the areas, and Blandy's tours page and the Visit Madeira festival pages help plan the evenings.
