The Lido, Funchal's hotel zone

Funchal's Lido and São Martinho: the seafront hotel zone, the Lido pools at €6, three Blue Flag bathing areas, the promenade, viewpoints and 135 restaurants.

Visitors booking a resort in Funchal usually end up west of the centre, along the Estrada Monumental, and wonder how far they are from everything. This is the Lido, with São Martinho behind it: the city's hotel zone, built along the sea cliffs, with the big seafront hotels, the bathing complexes and a long promenade.

Within 1 km of the Lido there are 144 listed places, 135 of them restaurants, and three of Funchal's five Blue Flag bathing areas: the Lido itself, Ponta Gorda-Poças do Governador and Formosa. The Aerobus runs through the zone to Praia Formosa, and the city buses reach the centre.

What the area has in facilities it lacks in old streets: it is well connected, with less character than the historic centre. The Lido's own pools cost €6 for an adult, and the promenade is free.

The bathing complexes and beaches

The common mistake is to expect sandy beaches. Funchal's swimming is mostly in lidos, sea pools and pebble coves, and the Lido area has several of them, three with a Blue Flag.

The Complexo Balnear do Lido, the municipal bathing complex, costs €6 for an individual entry, €2 for young people aged 7 to 17, €8.90 for a card of five entries, and €2.50 for a parasol or a sunbed; its season runs from June to September, and it carries a Blue Flag in 2026. Further west on the Estrada Monumental, the Ponta Gorda complex, rated 4.4 from 649 reviews, opens from 08:30 to 20:00, and the Ponta Gorda-Poças do Governador bathing area has a Blue Flag too.

Below the cliffs, Praia do Gorgulho, rated 4.2 from 326 reviews, is a small beach, and Praia Formosa, at the western end of the Aerobus route, carries the third Blue Flag of the area.

The sea is warmest from June to October, above 20 °C, and at its peak, about 22.9 °C, in September. The beaches guide covers the rest of the coast.

The promenade and the viewpoints

Visitors often stay by the pool and never walk the coast. The promenade is the area's best free sight.

The Promenade do Lido runs along the sea in front of the hotels, and it leads east towards the centre. Along it stands the Cais do Carvão, the old coal pier, a historic landmark rated 4.4 from 476 reviews.

Above the coast, two viewpoints look out over the ocean and the city. The Jardim Panorâmico, a park on the Estrada Monumental, is rated 4.5 from 1,252 reviews, and the Nazaré viewpoint, on Rua dos Estados Unidos da América, 4.7 from 862. They are the places for a sunset over the sea, looking west along the cliffs.

A walk from the Lido along the promenade, the coal pier and back, with a stop at one of the viewpoints, is an easy late afternoon without transport, and a good way to find your bearings on the first day.

Where to eat

People often eat at the hotel every night. The area has 135 restaurants within 1 km.

Among the most reviewed are Alforno Madeira, on the Estrada Monumental, rated 4.7 from 4,402 reviews; Papa Manuel, on the Promenade do Lido, 4.4 from 3,524; Leeno's Restaurant, 4.5 from 2,335; Sabor da Índia, 4.8 from 2,166; La Vaca Negra, 4.8 from 2,151; Restaurante O Dragoeiro, 4.4 from 2,151; and MadMarket, 4.6 from 1,841.

The choice runs from pizza and Indian food to Portuguese cooking, and the restaurants on the promenade add a view of the sea to the meal. For Madeiran dishes, look for espetada, beef on a laurel skewer, and black scabbardfish with banana.

For a night of the historic centre's restaurants and bars, the old town is a bus or taxi ride east. The guide to eating in Funchal covers the island's food.

Getting around

The mistake is to think the hotel zone is cut off. It is one of the best-connected parts of the city.

The Aerobus from the airport runs through the hotel zone to Praia Formosa, €6.70 on board or €5.55 on a pre-paid GIRO ticket, with departures from the airport from 08:30 to 22:00. City bus route 043 is named for Praia Formosa. A city trip costs €2.05 on board or €1.45 on a GIRO card, and day tickets start at €4.95.

To the centre, the promenade leads east along the sea, and the buses and taxis cover the rest. Madeira's taxis work to a table of fixed fares for set routes.

For day trips, the tours that collect from hotels pick up here, and the expressway runs above the zone: Câmara de Lobos is about 14 minutes by road, Cabo Girão about 17 and the airport about 20.

São Martinho, behind the coast

Visitors often see only the seafront strip. Behind it, São Martinho is a residential parish that climbs the hill.

Most of the Lido's addresses, from the Estrada Monumental to the Promenade do Lido, lie in the parish of São Martinho, which rises from the sea cliffs up the hillside. The Nazaré viewpoint and the Jardim Panorâmico are on its slopes.

The parish also holds two small monuments within the area: the memorial to the Madeiran combatants overseas, rated 4.5 from 62 reviews, and the sculpture "Paz e Liberdade", Peace and Freedom.

The slopes here are like the rest of Funchal: gentle along the coast, steep as soon as the streets turn uphill.

Who it suits

The mistake is to judge the area by the city's historic centre. It serves a different kind of stay.

The Lido suits a holiday built around the hotel and the sea: pools and bathing complexes, the promenade, sunsets from the viewpoints, and restaurants a short walk away. It suits families and anyone who wants a resort with the city within reach. It suits less those who want to step out of the door into old streets: the area is well connected by bus but has less character than the centre.

For the historic side of Funchal, the old town, the Sé and São Pedro are the areas to stay; for quiet and views, Santa Luzia above the old town.

Accommodation in Funchal adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights, collected by the hotel.

Planning a stay

The mistake is to plan a week in the hotel zone without leaving it. The island starts at the door.

A week at the Lido can mix pool days with the rest of the island: the centre and the old town by bus or on foot along the promenade, Monte by cable car from the old town, and day tours that collect from the hotels for the west, the north and the mountains.

In summer, the Lido's bathing season from June to September and the warm sea make the area at its best. In winter, the complexes' seasons and the weather change the plan: check what is open before counting on a swim.

The Frente MarFunchal price list has the Lido's current prices, and the 2026 Blue Flag list the bathing areas. For the other parts of the city, see the neighbourhoods guide, and for the hotels, the guide to where to stay.
