Visitors expecting a long sandy Funchal beach are usually surprised: the city sits on a rocky shore, and people swim from bathing complexes with pools and ladders into the sea, from pebble beaches and from sea pools in the rock. It works well once you know which is which.
Five of the city's bathing areas carry a Blue Flag in 2026: the Lido complex, Ponta Gorda-Poças do Governador, the Clube Naval do Funchal, Formosa and Barreirinha. The municipal complexes charge €6 for an adult, and three public beaches are free, among them Praia Formosa, 2 km long.
The sea is warm enough for most swimmers from June to October, above 20 °C, and at its warmest in September, at about 22.9 °C. Lifeguards are on duty in the bathing season, from June to September.

Complexes, free beaches and sea pools
The common mistake is to walk the seafront looking for sand. Funchal's swimming is organised differently.
The Funchal beaches come in three kinds. The bathing complexes, run by the municipal company Frente MarFunchal, are the Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha and the Doca do Cavacas: paid complexes with facilities and access to the sea, for an entry of €6 for an adult, €2 for ages 7 to 17 and for pensioners, and free for children up to 6 with an adult.
The free public beaches are Praia Formosa, the Praia de São Tiago below the old town's fort, and Lido Poente, beside the Lido complex. You pay nothing to walk on, and pay only for a sunbed or a parasol if you want one.
Most of the shore is pebble and rock, with ladders down into the sea. The Doca do Cavacas, also called the Poças do Gomes, is a complex of volcanic pools with access to the sea.
For a morning swim close to the hotels, the complexes are the easy choice; for a long walk by the sea, Praia Formosa.

Praia Formosa
Visitors often skip Praia Formosa because it lies at the western end of the hotel zone. It runs for 2 km, and it is free.
The Praia Formosa Madeira beach is made up of four sand-and-pebble beaches along 2 km of shore. It has parking, bars, toilets and changing rooms all year, and lifeguards from June to September, and it carries a Blue Flag in 2026. Entry is free; a sunbed or a parasol costs €2.80, and two sunbeds with a parasol €6.50.
It won an Accessible Beach award in 2015, with easy pedestrian access free of obstacles and equipment to help visually impaired swimmers.
And it is the only public beach on Madeira joined by a promenade to two towns: the seafront path runs from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos, so a swim can end a long walk along the coast.
The Aerobus from the airport runs through the hotel zone to Praia Formosa, the end of its route.

The Lido and Ponta Gorda
People staying in the hotel zone often do not realise two of the complexes are on their doorstep.
Among the best beaches in Funchal Madeira for a full day with facilities are the two complexes on the Estrada Monumental. The Complexo Balnear do Lido, the municipal bathing complex, costs €6 for an individual entry and €2 for young people, with sunbeds and parasols at €2.50 each; its season runs from June to September, and it carries a Blue Flag in 2026. Lido Poente, beside it, is a free public beach.
Further west on the same road, the Ponta Gorda complex opens from 08:30 to 20:00, and the Ponta Gorda-Poças do Governador bathing area has a Blue Flag too.
For a longer stay, a card of five entries costs €8.90, so regular swimmers pay less than €2 a visit. Packs of 20 or more entries have their own prices, and from October to March a low-season pack of 30 entries costs €23.10.
The Lido guide covers the hotel zone around them.

The old town, and the beaches beyond the city
Visitors often assume the old town has no swimming. It has two places below its walls, and the sand beaches are a short drive away.
In the Zona Velha, the Praia de São Tiago is a free outdoor sea pool below the fort, open daily from 09:00 to 20:00. Further east, the Praia da Barreirinha, at Largo do Socorro, opens from 09:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and to 20:00 at weekends, and carries a Blue Flag in 2026.
The best beaches near Funchal Madeira are a short drive east or west. Garajau, 12 minutes away, has a beach at the foot of the Cristo Rei, reached by a cable car, inside a marine reserve. The Reis Magos beach in Caniço carries a Blue Flag in 2026. For sand, Machico's sheltered beach is 23 minutes away, and Calheta's 39.
The Madeira beaches guide compares them all, and the 2026 Blue Flag list names every one.
Garajau is located 12 minutes from Funchal inside a marine reserve.Prices, passes and equipment
The mistake is to pay for a single entry every day of a week's stay. The passes cut the price.
At the Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha and the Doca do Cavacas, a single entry costs €6 for an adult. Young people aged 7 to 17, pensioners and people with a disability pay €2, and children up to 6 enter free with an adult.
A card of five entries costs €8.90, 20 entries €31.70 and 30 entries €46.50, loaded at any Frente MarFunchal ticket office; young people have their own pack of 20 entries at €23.50, limited to one entry a day.
At the complexes, a sunbed or a parasol costs €2.50, two sunbeds with a parasol €5.50, and a beach chair €0.70; at Praia Formosa, a sunbed or parasol costs €2.80. Equipment is limited to the stock on hand, so arrive early on a hot weekend.
The 2026 tariff lists every price.
A sunbed or parasol costs €2.80 at Praia Formosa complexes. The sea through the year
People often plan a beach holiday for July and find the water cooler than expected. The sea peaks later.
Off Funchal, the sea is at its coolest in March, at about 17.6 °C, and warms slowly: about 18.6 °C in May, 20.1 °C in June, 21.6 °C in July and 22.6 °C in August, before peaking at about 22.9 °C in September. It stays above 22 °C in October, at about 22.3 °C, and falls to about 19.5 °C by December.
The bathing season, when the Lido and Praia Formosa have lifeguards, runs from June to September. Madeira has 60 official bathing waters, and the bathing season notice sets the dates for each.
For swimming out of season, the complexes' low-season pack runs from October to March, and the sea in October is warmer than in June.

Safety and what to bring
The common mistake is to treat the Atlantic like a calm sea. Off Funchal the water is open ocean, even beside a pool.
Swim where there are lifeguards, in the bathing season from June to September, and follow the flags. Outside the complexes, most entries to the sea are by ladder or over rock, so check the swell before going in, and choose a pool on a rough day.
Bring shoes for the water: the pebbles are hard on bare feet, and the rock can be sharp and slippery. Bring a lock if you use a locker; the complexes rent padlocks for €4.
For families, the complexes are the simplest choice: children up to 6 enter free, and the young people's rate is €2.
