Planning an April stay
April balances everything: dry enough for the mountains most days, green from the winter, and mild at sea level. It is a strong month for hiking, with the classified trails booked on the SIMplifica portal at €4.50 a trail for visitors over 12, and for the gardens at their best before the Flower Festival. The sea is still cool, so swimming is for the hardy. If the festival is the reason for the trip, the last days of April and the whole of May are the time to be in Funchal, and a room near the centre saves the walk back after the evening events.
