What you actually do

You meet your guide in Funchal and travel to the Madeira Lakes area for an 8 hour walk along a levada. Lido Tours runs the route, and one guide leads the group in English, Spanish, French, German, or Portuguese. The operator picks you up at your hotel before heading out, and you return after roughly 8 hours.

The path stays on foot throughout the day, and the itinerary does not accommodate wheelchairs. You carry your own lunch, since food is explicitly not included, and the guide keeps the pace steady.

How far to trust the rating

The tour carries a score of 4.6 from 91 reviews. In the Madeira hiking tours category, which holds 89 listings, that review count ranks 28 of 89. The figure sits above average, but 91 votes is not enough to smooth out seasonal quirks or weather delays.

Compare it to the longer east coast option at 4,687 reviews, or the 7 hour Pico Arieiro transfer at 3,082. Your sample here is solid, but it will not cover every trail condition.

The best time to go

An 8 hour stretch on the mountain trails works best between July and September. Daily highs sit around 25 to 27 degrees Celsius during those months, and rainfall drops after June. October through March brings heavier rain, and the hills stay wetter than the coastal strip, which slows progress.

Because the hike lasts all day, starting early matters. You lose daylight faster in winter, and the trail becomes muddy after heavy downpours. Summer mornings offer the clearest visibility for the lake views.

What happens on the day

You wait at your hotel door while the driver collects you for the transfer to Funchal’s meeting point. The guide checks the group, hands out trail directions, and sets off toward the lake district.Rain shifts the schedule quickly. If showers start, the guide shortens the route or redirects to drier switchbacks.

You follow the leader’s pace without stopping for meals, since you packed your own lunch.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

This walk fits visitors who want a full day on the trail with transport handled, a guide speaking their language, and a steady pace across gentle gradients. It also works for travellers who prefer to carry their own food and skip formal dining breaks. It does not suit anyone needing wheelchair access or a shorter outing.

If you only have 4 hours, the 4 hour Porto da Cruz to Machico hiking tour with transfer covers similar terrain in less time. If you want a broader island circuit instead of a focused water channel walk, the 7 hour Madeira Funchal:East Tour Pico Arieiro & Santana&Laurissilva covers more ground.
