Visitors staying in central Funchal often look for a quieter base that is still close to everything. São Pedro, just west of the cathedral and uphill from the seafront, is that base, and it holds more museums than any other part of the city.

Within 500 m of its centre there are eight museums, among them the Quinta das Cruzes, with five centuries of art in an 18th-century villa and its gardens, and the Natural History Museum, opened in 1929 in the São Pedro palace. Above them, the Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico, the hilltop fort, looks over the whole city and the bay. On the seaward side lies the Santa Catarina Park, where the jazz festival's main nights are held. It also has 73 restaurants, from the seafront streets up towards the fort, and it lies a short walk west of the cathedral and the Municipal Garden.

The museums

The common mistake is to plan one museum in Funchal and miss that eight are within a short walk of each other here.

The Quinta das Cruzes Museum, on the Calçada do Pico, holds 500 years of art, ceramics, jewellery and antiques in an 18th-century villa surrounded by gardens; it is rated 4.3 from 992 reviews. The Natural History Museum, on Rua da Mouraria, opened in 1929 in the landmark São Pedro palace.

The newer museums are lighter. The 3D Fun Art Museum, on Rua do Surdo, rated 4.6 from 1,449 reviews, is the most reviewed of all. IMOM, the Immersive Museum of Madeira, is on Rua dos Aranhas. The Madeira Photography Museum, the Atelier Vicente's, on Rua da Carreira, is rated 4.7 from 394 reviews.

For a rainy day, São Pedro is the best part of the city to be in: several museums on neighbouring streets, and no need for transport between them. The museums guide covers each one.

The Pico fort and the viewpoints

Visitors often stay near the sea and never see the city from above. From São Pedro, the view is a short climb away.

The Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico, on Rua do Castelo, is an imposing hilltop fort with panoramic views of the city and the sea, and a café next to it, which makes the climb a stop rather than a detour. It is rated 4.1 from 1,181 reviews. In June, during the Atlantic Festival, it hosts the "Opera at the Peak" nights, four evenings of music and fireworks; in 2026 they fell on 6, 13, 20 and 27 June.

Closer to the museums, the Miradouro da Quinta das Cruzes, on Rua das Cruzes, is a small viewpoint rated 4.5 from 57 reviews.

The streets climb steeply from the centre to the fort, so walk up and come down, or take a taxi up. The viewpoints guide covers the rest of the city's lookouts.

The Santa Catarina Park

The mistake is to see the park only as a shortcut from the marina. It is a green space with a view, and a festival stage.

The Santa Catarina Park lies on São Pedro's seaward side, above the marina, with wide views over the bay of Funchal. It is on the walk from the cruise terminal on the Pontinha pier into the centre, about 15 to 20 minutes from the pier along the waterfront.

In early July, it hosts the main nights of the Funchal Jazz Festival: in 2026, from 9 to 11 July, at 21:30, with tickets at €15 a night or €40 for three. On New Year's Eve, its height over the bay makes it one of the places to watch the fireworks.

On an ordinary day it is simply a park to sit in, between the centre and the sea, with the marina and the bay below.

Where to eat

People often think the quiet streets mean few restaurants. There are 73 within 500 m.

Among the most reviewed are Hamburgueria do Mercado, rated 4.3 from 2,567 reviews; Rise & Dine, for brunch and fine dining, 4.9 from 2,435; Café Restaurante Gruta, 4.3 from 2,365; O.Giro Churros & Paninis, 4.8 from 2,270; Restaurante Londres, 4.5 from 1,856; and Jarana, for tapas and cured meats, 4.9 from 1,781.

São Pedro is a short walk from the Sé and its 149 restaurants, so the choice is wide either way. For Madeiran dishes, espetada, beef on a laurel skewer, and bolo do caco, the garlic-butter flatbread, are the ones to look for.

Monuments

Visitors often notice the sculptures of São Pedro without knowing who they honour.

Six monuments stand within 500 m. The fountain of the Rotunda do Infante, by António Duarte, on Avenida do Infante, is rated 4.5 from 195 reviews. On Avenida Arriaga stands a bust of Simón Bolívar, and nearby a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The Fortaleza do Pico, on its hill, is the largest monument of the area.

Together with the museums, they make São Pedro the natural place for a day of Funchal's history and culture, a short walk from the cathedral and the town square. The monuments guide covers each one.

Staying in São Pedro

The mistake is to choose between the lively centre and a quiet suburb. São Pedro is both central and calmer.

It is west of the centre, central and calmer than the streets around the cathedral and the old town. The seafront, the marina and Avenida Arriaga are a short walk downhill, and the museums and the park are on the doorstep.

The trade-off is the slope. The streets rise from the sea towards the Pico fort, so the higher the room, the steeper the walk home, and the better the view. A room in the lower streets keeps the walks flat.

Accommodation in Funchal adds the municipal tourist tax of €2 per guest per night for visitors over 12, for at most 7 nights. The city buses, €1.45 on a pre-paid GIRO card or €2.05 on board, cover the climb.

Planning a visit

The mistake is to rush the museums in one afternoon. Pick two and give them time.

A day in São Pedro can start at the Quinta das Cruzes and its gardens, continue to the Natural History Museum or the photography museum, and end with the climb to the Fortaleza do Pico for the view at sunset. On a second visit, the lighter museums, 3D Fun Art and IMOM, suit families.

Keep an evening for the Santa Catarina Park if you are in Funchal in early July, for the jazz.

Getting there is simple from anywhere in the centre. From the airport, the Aerobus, €6.70 on board, stops on Avenida do Mar, on the seafront below São Pedro, a short walk uphill. From the cruise pier, the walk along the waterfront past the marina takes about 15 to 20 minutes to the park. And from the cathedral or the market, São Pedro is a few minutes west on foot, with the city buses for the steeper streets.

The Funchal Jazz Festival site has the concert tickets, and the Visit Funchal site covers the historic centre next door. For the other parts of the city, see the neighbourhoods guide.
