Visitors who picture Madeira picture the Atlantic from a balcony, and in Funchal that view is easy to have. An ocean view hotel Funchal Madeira offers is usually on the cliffs of the Lido, in São Martinho, where the resort hotels face the sea, or on the hills above the bay, where the view takes in the whole city and the harbour.
Of the 58 hotels and aparthotels in the city with a guest score of 7.0 or more, 31 list sea-view rooms. Their median score is 8.7, and on a sample search for two adults, two nights from 10 to 12 October 2026, their median price was about €555. Prices move with the dates.
A sea view is not always extra. At many of the Lido hotels, the cheapest room already has the view; at others, the sea-view room costs from a few percent to well over half more than the cheapest room.

On the water
The common mistake is to book a hotel with a view of the sea and expect to step into it. Only a few are on the water itself.
The Funchal Madeira oceanfront hotels are the ones on the Lido cliffs and along the Avenida do Infante. The Pestana Vila Lido, a five-star, is beachfront, with direct access to a private beach area and sea views, 9.1 from 1,386 reviews for about €988 for the two nights. The Savoy Palace and the Royal Savoy, on the Avenida do Infante, list a private beach area, and the Royal Savoy calls its own private ocean access, with two heated lagoon-style pools, 8.8 from 227 for about €817.
The Hotel Porto Mare, in the Vila Porto Mare resort in a tropical garden on the Atlantic oceanfront, has balconies over the sea, the garden or the pool, 8.9 from 1,067 for about €757. The Pestana Promenade has direct access to the seafront promenade and Atlantic views from its balconies, 8.9 from 630.
Reid's Palace stands on a cliff in 10 acres of subtropical gardens over the Atlantic, 9.5 from 519 reviews, for about €1,926.
The rock below the Lido is for swimming from ladders and platforms; the Lido bathing complex, €6 a visit on the Frente MarFunchal tariff, is the public way in.

Views over the bay
Visitors often assume the best view is at sea level. From the hills, the view takes in the city, the harbour and the ships.
The Views Baía, adults-only, in São Pedro, looks over Funchal bay from private balconies onto the Atlantic or the mountains, 8.9 from 2,503 reviews for about €454, the most reviewed of the sea-view hotels.
Quinta do Monte, a historic manor house in Monte, has rooms with views of the gardens, the sea or the city, 8.6 from 1,733 reviews for about €368. The ARTS IN Hotel Conde Carvalhal, a restored Madeiran mansion 900 m from the old town, has views of the sea, the city and the mountains from its gardens and terraces, 8.7 from 895 for about €383.
The Madeira Panorâmico, 3 km from the centre, looks over Funchal and the Atlantic, 8.6 from 574 for about €392, and the Apartamentos Quinta Mãe dos Homens, above the old town, over the bay, 8.5 from 728 for about €299.
From the hills, the view is wider and the walk back steeper: check the distance to the seafront before you book.

What a sea-view room costs
People often assume a sea view always costs a supplement. In Funchal, it depends on the hotel.
In the October search, at many hotels the cheapest room offered already had a sea view: at the Meliá Madeira Mare, the Hotel Porto Mare, the Pestana Vila Lido, Reid's Palace, the Allegro Madeira and the Golden Residence, among others, there was no premium for the view on those dates.
At others, it cost more. The sea-view room at the Savoy Palace cost about 15% more than the cheapest, at Moon & Sun about 15% more, at Quinta da Bela Vista about 20% and at the Pestana Casino Studios about 21%. At the Royal Savoy it cost about 55% more, and at the Pestana Quinta Perestrello about 73% more.
So compare the room types on the dates you want: at a hotel where the cheapest room already has the view, it is the one to book; at a hotel with garden and sea sides, the view has a price.
Ask for a high floor when you book: the lower floors of a cliff hotel can look at the terrace or the pool rather than the horizon.

Value with a view
The mistake is to think a sea view needs five stars. Several four-stars have one for less.
The Golden Residence, at the western end of the Lido, has panoramic views of Praia Formosa, an outdoor pool, a wellness centre with a heated indoor pool and balconies, 8.6 from 2,400 reviews for about €352. The Allegro Madeira, adults-only, 5 minutes from the promenade, scores 8.7 from 1,003 for about €389, with a 360° rooftop bar.
The Quinta da Penha de França, in tropical gardens with far-reaching sea views, two outdoor seawater pools and access to the sea, scores 8.4 from 2,822 reviews for about €353. The Madeira TURIM Santa Maria, in the centre, lists sea views with a rooftop pool, 8.9 from 2,251 for about €671.
Among the smaller places, Residencial do Vale, a three-star a short walk from the cathedral with sea views from its rooms, scores 8.9 from 360 for about €392, and the Aparthotel Imperatriz, in the centre, was the lowest-priced sea-view stay, about €242, at 7.2.
Praia Formosa, below the Golden Residence, carries a Blue Flag on the 2026 list.
A sea view in Funchal usually means the bay to the south, not an open horizon.Choosing the room
Visitors often book a view without asking which way it faces. The two sides of the city look at different things.
The Lido hotels look over the open sea, and several towards Cabo Girão; from the Pestana Grand, on the rock of Ponta da Cruz, the view runs to the cliffs. The hotels over the bay in São Pedro and on the Avenida do Infante look over the harbour, where the cruise ships dock and, on New Year's Eve, the fireworks fill the bay.
Check three things before you book: whether the room type says sea view or partial sea view, the floor, and whether the balcony is private. Listings with garden, city and mountain views sell those sides as separate rooms.
For the best of both, the quintas on the hills have the gardens in front and the sea beyond: Quinta do Monte and Quinta Mirabela in Monte look over the bay from well above it.
The viewpoints guide covers the views you can reach on foot.
