The Cristiano Ronaldo statue in Funchal stands in front of the CR7 museum, on the Praça do Mar at Avenida Sá Carneiro 27, by the marina. The city is his birthplace, and his name is on the museum, the statue and even the airport.

The CR7 museum, on the seafront by the marina at Praça do Mar, opened on 15 December 2013 and shows more than a hundred of his individual and team trophies, among them five Ballons d'Or and four Golden Boots. It opens Monday to Saturday, and entry costs €5. In front of it stands a bronze statue of Ronaldo, 3.40 m tall with its pedestal, in his free-kick pose.

A visit takes an hour or less, and it sits on the walk between the marina and the old town.

The CR7 museum

The common mistake is to expect a stadium-size museum. It is a compact museum of 400 m², full of silver.

The Museu CR7 is at Avenida Sá Carneiro 27, on the Praça do Mar by the marina. Its collection follows Ronaldo's career across his clubs and the national team: more than a hundred trophies, including the five Ballons d'Or of 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, and the four Golden Boots of 2007/08, 2010/11, 2013/14 and 2014/15, with photographs, videos and interactive displays. A life-size wax figure stands ready for photographs.

Entry costs €5 a person, and children pay from the age of 10. It opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00; check the time before a late visit. It is closed on Sundays.

It is by far the most reviewed museum in the city, with more than 14,000 reviews, so expect company in the middle of the day. The museums guide covers the rest of Funchal's collections.

The statue and the airport

People often photograph the statue and leave. It is not the only place with his name.

The bronze statue in front of the museum is the work of the Madeiran sculptor Ricardo Velosa. It shows Ronaldo standing before a free kick, and with its pedestal it rises 3.40 m. It is outdoors and free, so it can be seen on a Sunday when the museum is shut.

The island's airport carries his name too: since 29 March 2017 it has been known commercially as Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport. It lies 18.6 km from the centre of Funchal, about 20 minutes by road.

The marina and the statue are a short walk along the seafront from the old town and from the Santa Catarina Park. Visit Madeira has the museum's current hours.
